1

Recitative [Alto, Tenor]

Continuo

Ein Herz, das seinen Jesum lebend weiß,
A heart that knows its Jesus living
Empfindet Jesu neue Güte
feels the new loving-kindness of Jesus
Und dichtet nur auf seines Heilands Preis,
and writes only in his saviour's praise
Wie freuet sich ein gläubiges Gemüte.
how a believing soul is happy.

2

Aria [Tenor]

Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Auf, Gläubige, singet die lieblichen Lieder,
Up, believers, sing the delightful songs,
Euch scheinet ein herrlich verneuetes Licht.
on you shines a glorious renewed light.
Der lebende Heiland gibt selige Zeiten,
The living saviour gives blessed times.
Auf, Seelen, ihr müsset ein Opfer bereiten,
Up souls, you must prepare a sacrifice,
Bezahlet dem Höchsten mit Danken die Pflicht.
pay your duty to the highest with thanks.

3

Recitative [Alto, Tenor]

Continuo

Wohl dir, Gott hat an dich gedacht,
You are fortunate, God has thought of you,
O Gott geweihtes Eigentum,
o you who are the consecrated property of God,
Der Heiland lebt und siegt mit Macht.
The saviour lives and conquers with might.
Zu deinem Heil, zu seinem Ruhm
For your salvation, for his own fame
Muß hier der Satan furchtsam zittern
must now Satan fearfully tremble
Und sich die Hölle selbst erschüttern.
and Hell itself be shaken.
Es stirbt der Heiland dir zu gut
The saviour dies for your good
Und fähret vor dich zu der Höllen,
and journeys to Hell for you,
Sogar vergießet er sein kostbar Blut,
even pours out his precious blood,
Daß du in seinem Blute siegst;
so that you may be victorious in his blood;
Denn dieses kann die Feinde fällen,
for this can conquer the enemy
Und wenn der Streit dir an die Seele dringt,
and when the strife for you penetrates to the soul
Daß du alsdenn nicht überwunden liegst.
so that you even then may not lie overcome.
Der Liebe Kraft ist vor mich ein Panier
The might of love is for me a banner
Zum Heldenmut, zur Stärke in dem Streiten.
for heroic courage, for strength in the strife.
Mir Siegeskronen zu bereiten,
To prepare for me the crown of victory
Nahmst du die Dornenkrone dir,
you took the crown of thorns upon yourself,
Mein Herr, mein Gott, mein auferstandnes Heil,
my lord, my God, my resurrected saviour,
So hat kein Feind an mir zum Schaden teil.
so no enemy has a share in me for harm.

Die Feinde zwar sind nicht zu zählen,
The enemy indeed are innumerable,
Gott schützt die ihm getreuen Seelen,
God protects the soul that has been true to him.
Der letzte Feind ist Grab und Tod,
The last enemy is the grave and death.
Gott macht auch den zum Ende unsrer Not.
God makes even that an end to our distress.

Aria (Duet) [Alto, Tenor]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Wir danken und preisen dein brünstiges Lieben
We thank and praise your fervent love
Und bringen ein Opfer der Lippen vor dich.
and bring an offering of the lips for you.
Der Sieger erwecket die freudigen Lieder,
The victor awakens the joyful songs,
Der Heiland erscheinet und tröstet uns wieder
the saviour appears and comforts us again
Und stärket die streitende Kirche durch sich.
and strengthens the quarrelling church through himself.

5

Recitative [Alto, Tenor]

Continuo

Doch wirke selbst den Dank in unserm Munde,
But bring about yourself the thanks in our mouths,
Indem er allzu irdisch ist,
although it is too earthly,
Ja, schaffe, daß zu keiner Stunde
yes, ordain that at no hour
Dich und dein Werk kein menschlich Herz vergißt,
no human heart forgets you and your work
Ja, laß in dir das Labsal unsrer Brust
yes,let the refreshment of our breasts in you
Und aller Herzen Trost und Lust,
and the comfort and joy of all hearts
Die unter deiner Gnade trauen,
who trust in your mercy
Vollkommen und unendlich sein.
be perfect and everlasting.
Es schließe deine Hand uns ein,
Let your hand enclose us
Daß wir die Wirkung kräftig schauen,
so that we may see the mighty effect
Was uns dein Tod und Sieg erwirbt,
that your death and victory gain for us,
Und daß man nun nach deinem Auferstehen
and that after your resurrection we
Nicht stirbt, wenn man gleich zeitlich stirbt,
do not die, even if we die for a time,
Und wir dadurch zu deiner Herrlichkeit eingehen.
and by this we enter into your glory.
Was in uns ist, erhebt dich, großer Gott,
What is in us exalts you, great God,
Und preiset deine Huld und Treu,
and praises your grace and faithfulness
Dein Auferstehen macht sie wieder neu,
Your resurrection makes these again new,
Dein großer Sieg macht uns von Feinden los
your great victory frees us from our enemies
Und bringet uns zum Leben;
and brings us to life
Drum sei dir Preis und Dank gegeben.
Therefore may praise and thanks be given to you.

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Oboe I/II, Violino I col Soprano, Violino II coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Continuo

Erschallet, ihr Himmel, erfreue dich, Erde,
Resound, you heavens, rejoice, earth
Lobsinge dem Höchsten, du glaubende Schar.
sing praise to the highest, you throng of believers.
Es schauet und schmecket ein jedes Gemüte
Each spirit sees and tastes
Des lebenden Heilands unendliche Güte,
the unending loving-kindness of the living saviour
Er tröstet und stellet als Sieger sich dar.
He comforts us and appears as victor.
