Cantata BWV 141
Das ist je gewißlich wahr
English Translation in Interlinear Format
Cantata BWV 141 - That is indeed is certainly true

Event: Cantata for 3rd Sunday in Advent
Readings: Epistle: 1 Corinthians 4: 1-5; Gospel: Matthew 11: 2-10
Text: 1 Timothy 1, 15 (Mvt. 1); Johann Friedrich Helbig (Mvts. 2-4)
Composer: Georg Philipp Telemann (1719-1720)

Biblical quotations in green font, chorales in purple

1

Chorus[S, A, T, B]

Das ist je gewißlich wahr und ein theuer werthes Wort,
That is indeed is certainly true and a most precious word
Daß Christus Jesus kommen ist in die Welt,
that Christ Jesus has come into the world
Sünder selig zu machen.
to make sinners blessed .

2

Aria [Tenor]

Jesus ist der Menschen Heil.
Jesus is the salvation of mankind
Doch wer dieses will genießen,
but whoever wishes to enjoy this
muß sich wahrlich auch entschließen,
must decide sincerely for himself
ohne falschen Heuchelschein
without false hypocrisy
ihm alleine treu zu sein,
to trust in him alone,
sonst wird ihm dies nicht zu Theil
.
otherwise he shall have no share in this.

3

Recitative [Alto]

Wir müssen recht im Geiste nach ihm fragen
We must rightly in the spirit ask after him
und nicht nur: hier, hier, hier ist Christus sagen,
and not merely say: here here is Christ,
weil alle Heuchler sich mit Erklärung tragen,
since all hypocrites concern themselves with declarations,
sonst schänden wir das Evangelium
otherwise we discredit the Gospel
als uns‘ren besten Ruhm:
as our best reputation:
an diesem aber merken wir,
but we keep this in mind
daß, so wir sein Gebot betrachten,
that if we have regard for his commands
und uns nach selbigem unsträflich achten
and concern ourselves with the same without blame
daß wir den Heiland kennen.
then we know the saviour
Dagegen läßt sich jemand einen Christen nennen,
In contrast if anyone calls himself a Christian
und giebt der Sünde noch Gehör,
and still gives obedience to sin,
der ist ein Lügner und nichts mehr
.
he is a liar and nothing more.

4

Aria [Bass]

Jesu, Trost der Geistlich-Armen,
Jesus, consolation of the poor in spirit,
lass dich uns're Noth erbarmen,
have mercy on our distress,
hilf zur wahren Glaubens-Kraft.
help us to have the power of faith.

Gieb, daß wir uns dir befehlen
Grant that we entrust ourselves to you
und kein falsches Wort erwählen,
and choose no false word
daran das Verderben haft't.
which entails ruin.
