	Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz? Why do you cause distress to yourself, my heart? Bekümmerst dich und trägest Schmerz Do you torment yourself and endure sorrow Nur um das zeitliche Gut? only for things of this passing world?
	Ach, ich bin arm, Ah, I am poor, Mich drücken schwere Sorgen. Heavy cares oppress me. Vom Abend bis zum Morgen from evening till morning Währt meine liebe Not. lasts this distress that belongs to me. Dass Gott erbarm! May God have mercy on me! Wer wird mich noch erlösen But who will free me Vom Leibe dieser bösen from the body of this evil Und argen Welt? and wicked world? Wie elend ist's um mich bestellt! How miserable are my circumstances! Ach! wär ich doch nur tot! Ah, if only I were dead!
	Vertrau du deinem Herren Gott, trust the Lord your God Der alle Ding erschaffen hat. Who has created all things.

	Ich bin veracht', I am despised, Der Herr hat mich zum Leiden The Lord has made me for suffering Am Tage seines Zorns gemacht; on the day of his anger; Der Vorrat, hauszuhalten, my store of provisions, by which I live, Ist ziemlich klein; is only small; Man schenkt mir vor den Wein der Freuden I have been given in place of the wine of joy Den bittern Kelch der Tränen ein. The bitter cup of tears. Wie kann ich nun mein Amt mit Ruh verwalten, How then can I fulfil my duty in peace Wenn Seufzer meine Speise und Tränen das Getränke sein? when sighs are my food and tears my drink?

	Er kann und will dich lassen nicht, He can and will not abandon you, Er weiß gar wohl, was dir gebricht, he knows well what you lack, Himmel und Erd ist sein! Heaven and earth are his!
	Soprano: Ach, wie? Ah, how? Gott sorget freilich vor das Vieh, God does indeed care for the cattle, Er gibt den Vögeln seine Speise, he gives to the birds their food Er sättiget die jungen Raben, he satisfies the young ravens, Nur ich, ich weiß nicht, auf was Weise only I do not know in what way Ich armes Kind I, poor child, Mein bisschen Brot soll haben; shall have my little bit of bread; Wo ist jemand, der sich zu meiner Rettung findt? Where can anybody be found to rescue me?
	Dein Vater und dein Herre Gott, Your father and the Lord your God Der dir beisteht in aller Not. stand by you in all distress.
	Alto: Ich bin verlassen, I am forsaken Es scheint, it seems Als wollte mich auch Gott bei meiner Armut hassen, as if God also would hate me in my poverty, Da er's doch immer gut mit mir gemeint. Although he has always meant well by me. Ach Sorgen, Ah, cares, Werdet ihr denn alle Morgen are you renewed every morning Und alle Tage wieder neu? and again every day? So klag ich immerfort; Then I shall lament forever; Ach! Armut, hartes Wort, Ah, poverty, hard work Wer steht mir denn in meinem Kummer bei? Who will stand by me in my woe?

	Ach süßer Trost! Wenn Gott mich nicht verlassen Ah, sweet consolation! If God is not willing to abandon me Und nicht versäumen will, and to neglect me, So kann ich in der Still then I can in calmness Und in Geduld mich fassen. And in patience keep a grip on myself. Die Welt mag immerhin mich hassen, The world may still hate me, So werf ich meine Sorgen but I shall cast my cares Mit Freuden auf den Herrn, with joy upon the Lord, Und hilft er heute nicht, so hilft er mir doch morgen. And if he does not help me today, then he will help me tomorrow. Nun leg ich herzlich gern Now I am heartily glad to put Die Sorgen unters Kissen my cares beneath my pillow Und mag nichts mehr als dies zu meinem Troste wissen: and I need to know no more for my comfort than this:

	Auf Gott steht meine Zuversicht, On God depends my confidence, Mein Glaube lässt ihn walten. my faith lets him rule. Nun kann mich keine Sorge nagen, Now no care can eat away at me, Nun kann mich auch kein Armut plagen. Now no poverty also can cause me distress. Auch mitten in dem größten Leide Even in the greatest suffering Bleibt er mein Vater, meine Freude, he remains my father, my joy, Er will mich wunderlich erhalten. He will support me in a marvellous way.

6	Recitative [Alto]

	Ei nun! So then! So will ich auch recht sanfte ruhn. I shall rest completely at peace. Euch, Sorgen, sei der Scheidebrief gegeben! You, cares, take your leave! Nun kann ich wie im Himmel leben. Now I can live as in heaven.
