Joanne Lunn (Soprano)

Born: 1973 - England

The English soprano, Joanne Lunn, graduated from the Royal College of Music where she was awarded the Tagore Gold Medal.

Joanne Lunn performs internationally as a soloist with many other leading groups such as the English Baroque Soloists, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Philip Pickett's Musicians of the Globe, New London Consort, London Handel Society, Academy of Ancient Music, Hilliard Ensemble, Philippe Herreweghe's Collegium Vocale Gent, The King’s Consort and Gabrieli Consort.

Joanne Lunn's operatic credits include Gluck's Orphee and Alceste, Verdi's Falstaff and Four Sacred Pieces and Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea. Her stage appearance include also her ENO debut in Steven Pimlott's production of Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea conducted by Harry Christophers; in February 2004, she sang the role of Helena in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream in Venice conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner and directed by David Pountney; a tour of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in Spain and semi staged productions of Monteverdi’s Orfeo in Paris and for the Beijing International Music Festival with Philip Pickett directed by Sir Jonathan Miller.

In 1999, Joanne Lunn made her BBC Proms debut performing with the Academy of Ancient Music, New London Consort and Musicians of the Globe. Concert appearances have included J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, for the Musik Podium Stuttgart conducted by Frieder Bernius, with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Hall; George Frideric Handel’s Messiah at the Halle Handel Festival and at St. Mark’s Venice as well as G.F. Handel’s L’Allegro and Haydn’s Heiligmesse, Harmoniemesse and Paukenmesse with the Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot Gardiner; J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243) at the BBC Proms with the Academy of Ancient Music; G.F. Handel's Messiah in Spain and Portugal and; John Rutter’s Requiem with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer; Haydn’s The Seasons with the Huddersfield Choral Society; Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in Toulouse directed by Marc Minkowski; G.F. Handel’s Messiah, J.S. Bach Magnificat (BWV 243) and Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) with Bach Collegium Japan conducted by Masaaki Suzuki; W.A. Mozart’s Mass in C Minor for the City of London Sinfonia; Purcell’s The Blessed Virgin’s Expostulation and The Fairy Queen in Salzburg; J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) with the Academy of Ancient Music in Alzenau and with Les Musiciens du Louvre and Marc Minkowski; Easter Oratorio (BWV 249) with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales under Nicholas Kraemer; Nelson Mass for the Ulster Orchestra; J. Rutter’s Mass of the Children at St Paul’s Cathedral and at Symphony Hall, Birmingham; Harmoniemesse for Scottish Chamber Orchestra; L’Allegro, Il Penseroso ed il Moderato at the Handel Festival in Göttingen; The Creation at Cadogan Hall; Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missa Votiva for Musik Podium Stuttgart; W.A. Mozart Exsultate Jubilate; Gustav Mahler 4th Symphony at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Moscow; Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) at the Sage, Gateshead and Messiah in Ribchester. She was a regular soloist in the John Eliot Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in 2000.

Recent engagements include concerts in Mexico with Musicians of the Globe directed by Philip Pickett; Saul with Cappella Amsterdam; the first performances of Johann Christian Bach’s Mailänder Vesperpsalmen with Concerto Köln at the Frauenkirche, Dresden; Bach Cantatas with Le Concert Lorrain, Belinda’s Dido & Aeneas in Warsaw; Israel in Egypt with Düsseldorfer Symphoniker and St John Passion (BWV 245) with Les Musiciens du Louvre (Marc Minkowski).

Joanne Lunn features as a soloist on many CD recordings. Her discography includes Antonio Vivaldi’s Laudate Pueri with The King’s Consort (Hyperion), Haydn Masses with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir (Philips), John Rutter’s Mass of the Children with City of London Sinfonia conducted by the composer (Collegium), Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Bach Cantatas cycle recorded during the Bach Pilgrimage in 2000 (Deutsche Grammophon/Soli Deo Gloria), J.S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio (BWV 249) with Frieder Bernius and the Kammerchor Stuttgart (Carus), J.S. Bach’s Motets (BWV 225-230) with The Hilliard Ensemble (ECM) and Messiah with the Bach Collegium Japan and John Rutter.

Engagements in 2010-2011 include concerts with the Academy of Ancient Music in Aldeburgh and Istanbul, Bach Cantatas at the NiedersäMusiktage and also for Bach Collegium Japan, Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) for the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) at the Tonhalle, Zürich (Masaaki Suzuki), The Fairy Queen in Rotterdam, Paris and Barcelona and Carl Heinrich Graun’s Der Tod Jesu with Collegium Vocale Gent. Subsequent engagements include J.S. Bach Secular Cantatas with Bach Collegium Japan and Saul with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
