1	Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn Mein Herz und Sinn ergeben: Was böse scheint, ist mir Gewinn, Der Tod selbst ist mein Leben. Ich bin ein Sohn Des, der den Thron Des Himmels aufgezogen; Ob er gleich schlägt Und Kreuz auflegt, Bleibt doch sein Herz gewogen.							I have surrendered to God's heart and mind my heart and mind. What seems evil is my gain, Death itself is my life. I am a son of him who opened the throne of heaven; though he strikes me and lays the cross upon me, his heart remains well disposed to me.
2	Das kann mir fehlen nimmermehr, Mein Vater muß mich lieben! Wann er gleich auch mich würf ins Meer, So will er mich nur üben Und mein Gemüt In seiner Güt Gewöhnen fest zu stehen: Halt ich den Stand, Weiß seine Hand Mich wieder zu erhöhen.							I can never again lack anything, my father must love me! Even if he throws me in the sea, he wants only to test me and in his kindness to accustom my spirit to stand firm: if I keep this foothold, his hand knows how to raise me up again.
3	Ich bin ja von mir selber nicht Entsprungen noch formieret, Mein Gott ist's, der mich zugericht', An Leib und Seel gezieret: Der Seelen Sitz Mit Sinn und Witz, Den Leib mit Fleisch und Beinen. Wer so viel tut, Des Herz und Mut Kann's nimmer böse meinen.							I certainly did not originate or form myself, it is my God who has made me ready, adorned me with body and soul: the soul with mind and wits, the body with flesh and bones. The heart and mind of him who does so much can never intend evil.
4	Woher wollt ich mein Aufenthalt Auf dieser Erd erlangen? Ich wäre längsten tot und kalt, Wo mich nicht Gott umfangen Mit seinem Arm, Der alles warm, Gesund und fröhlich machet; Was er nicht hält, Das bricht und fällt, Was er erfreut, das lachet.							Why should I wish to prolong my stay on this earth? Long since I would be dead and cold if God did not embrace me with his arms that warm everything, make it healthy and happy. What he does not support breaks and falls, where he causes delight there is laughter.
5	Zudem ist Weisheit und Verstand Bei ihm ohn alle Maßen; Zeit, Ort und Stund ist ihm bekannt, Zu tun und auch zu lassen. Er weiß, wann Freud, Er weiß, wann Leid Uns, seinen Kindern, diene; Und was er tut, Ist alles gut, Ob's noch so traurig schiene.							Moreover infinite wisdom and understanding are with him; he knows the time, place and hour to do and also to leave undone. He knows when joy , when sorrow best serves us his children. All that he does is good even though it may seem sorrowful.
6	Du denkest zwar, wann du nicht hast, Was Fleisch und Blut begehret, Als sei mit einer großen Last Dein Glück und Heil beschweret: Hast spat und früh Viel Sorg und Müh, An deinen Wunsch zu kommen, Und denkest nicht, Daß, was geschicht, Gescheh zu deinen Frommen.							You really think that if you do not have what flesh and blood crave that with a great burden your health and happiness are weighed down: early and late you have much care and worry to attain what you wish, and you do not think that what occurs happens for your advantage.
7	Fürwahr, der dich geschaffen hat Und ihm zur Ehr erbauet, Der hat schon längst in seinem Rat Ersehen und beschauet Aus wahrer Treu, Was dienlich sei Dir und den Deinen allen; Laß ihm doch zu, Daß er nur tu Nach seinem Wohlgefallen.							In truth, he who created you and made you for his glory has long since in his wisdom foreseen and contemplated in sincere faithfulness what is useful for you and all your people; then let him act only according to his pleasure.
8	Wann's Gott gefällt, so kann's nicht sein, Es wird dich letzt erfreuen: as du itzt nennest Kreuz und Pein, Wird dir zum Trost gedeihen. Wart in Geduld: Die Gnad und Huld Wird sich doch endlich finden; All Angst und Qual Wird auf einmal Gleich wie ein Dampf verschwinden.							If it pleases God, then it cannot be, in the end it will bring you joy: what you now call tribulation and pain will turn out to be for your comfort: wait in patience : his grace and mercy will in the end be found; all anguish and torment will one day vanish like a puff of smoke.
9	Das Feld kann ohne Ungestüm Gar keine Früchte tragen: So fällt auch Menschenwohlfahrt üm Bei lauter guten Tagen. Die Aloe Bringt bittres Weh, Macht gleichwohl rote Wangen: So muß ein Herz Durch Angst und Schmerz Zu seinem Heil gelangen.							Without violent effort the field can bear no fruit: the same thing happens with human welfare during days that are nothing but good. Aloe brings bitter woe, but at the same time makes cheeks red: so must a heart through anguish and sorrow attain its salvation.
10	Ei nun, mein Gott, so fall ich dir Getrost in deine Hände; Nimm mich und mach es du mit mir Bis an mein letztes Ende, Wie du wohl weißt, Daß meinem Geist Dadurch sein Nutz entstehe Und deine Ehr Je mehr und mehr Sich in ihr selbst erhöhe.							Ah now, my God, may I fall consoled in your hands. Accept me and so deal with me until my final end as you well know how , so that my spirit may benefit in this way and your honour ever more and more may be exalted in me.
11	Willst du mir geben Sonnenschein, So nehm ich's an mit Freuden, Soll's aber Kreuz und Unglück sein, Will ich's geduldig leiden. Soll mir allhier Des Lebens Tür Noch ferner offen stehen: Wie du mich führst Und führen wirst, So will ich gern mitgehen.							If you give me sunshine, then I accept it with joy, but if there must be affliction and misfortune I shall endure it patiently. May the door of life for me here in the future remain open: as you lead and will lead me I shall willingly go along with you.
12	Soll ich denn auch des Todes Weg Und finstre Straßen reisen: Wohlan, so tret ich Bahn und Steg, Den mir dein Augen weisen. Du bist mein Hirt, Der alles wird Zu solchem Ende kehren, Daß ich einmal In deinem Saal Dich ewig möge ehren.							If I have to travel even by the way of death and by dark roads: well then, I shall walk along the way and path that your eyes show me, you are my shepherd, who will guide everything to such an end that one day in your hall I may honour you for ever.
