Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke,
I am content with my luck,
Das mir der liebe Gott beschert.
With which my dear God blesses me.
Soll ich nicht reiche Fülle haben,
Even if I do not have rich abundance,
So dank ich ihm vor kleine Gaben
I thank him for little gifts
Und bin auch nicht derselben wert.
And do not deserve even these. |

Gott ist mir ja nichts schuldig,

Und wenn er mir was gibt,
and whatever he gives to me
So zeigt er mir, dass er mich liebt;
he shows in this way that he loves me;
Ich kann mir nichts bei ihm verdienen,
I can deserve nothing from him,
Denn was ich tu, ist meine Pflicht.
Since what I do is my duty.
Ja! wenn mein Tun gleich noch so gut geschienen
Indeed, even when what I do may seem so good
So hab ich doch nichts Rechtes ausgericht.

Doch ist der Mensch so ungeduldig,
Yet people are so impatient
Dass er sich oft betrübt,
that often they feel aggrieved
Wenn ihm der liebe Gott nicht überflüssig gibt.

Hat er uns nicht so lange Zeit
Has he not for so long
Umsonst ernähret und gekleidt
freely fed and clothed us
Und will uns einsten seliglich
and one day will he not make us blessed
In seine Herrlichkeit erhöhn?
In his glory?
Es ist genug vor mich,

Dass ich nicht hungrig darf zu Bette gehn.

A quiet conscience, a cheerful spirit,
Ein dankbares Herze, das lobet und preist,
a thankful heart,that praises and extols,

Will ich indes mein Brot genießen,
I will meanwhile enjoy my bread,
Und wenn mein Lebenslauf,

Mein Lebensabend wird beschließen,
is ended by old age,
So teilt mir Gott den Groschen aus,
then God will give me my pennyworth
Da steht der Himmel drauf.
And with this Heaven stands open.
O! wenn ich diese Gabe
Oh! If only I had this gift
zu meinem Gnadenlohne habe,
as my reward given by his grace
So brauch ich weiter nichts.
