1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Oboe I-III, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Jesu, nun sei gepreiset
Jesus, now be praised
Zu diesem neuen Jahr
at this new year
Für dein Güt, uns beweiset
for your kindness, revealed to us
In aller Not und G'fahr,
in all need and danger,
Daß wir haben erlebet
so that we have lived to see
Die neu fröhliche Zeit,
the new joyful time
Die voller Gnaden schwebet
that hovers full of grace
Und ewger Seligkeit;
and eternal blessedness;
Daß wir in guter Stille
so that in good peacefulness we
Das alt Jahr habn erfüllet.
have completed the old year.
Wir wolln uns dir ergeben
We want to give ourselves to you
Itzund und immerdar,
now and evermore,
Behüte Leib, Seel und Leben
protect body, soul and life
Hinfort durchs ganze Jahr!
from this time on throughout the whole year!

2

Aria [Soprano]

Oboe I-III, Continuo

Laß uns, o höchster Gott, das Jahr vollbringen,
Let us, o God most high, complete the year
Damit das Ende so wie dessen Anfang sei.
so that the end may be like this beginning.
Es stehe deine Hand uns bei,
May your hand stay with us
Daß künftig bei des Jahres Schluß
so that in the future at the year's end
Wir bei des Segens Überfluß
with an abundance of blessing
Wie itzt ein Halleluja singen.
we shall as now sing alleluia.

3

Recitative [Alto]

Continuo

Ach! deine Hand, dein Segen muß allein
Ah! your hand, your blessing must alone
Das A und O, der Anfang und das Ende sein.
be the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end.
Das Leben trägest du in deiner Hand,
You bear our life in your hand,
Und unsre Tage sind bei dir geschrieben;
and our days are written down with you;
Dein Auge steht auf Stadt und Land;
your eye remains on city and country;
Du zählest unser Wohl und kennest unser Leiden,
you keep account of our welfare and know our sufferings,
Ach! gib von beiden,
Ah! give from both
Was deine Weisheit will, worzu dich dein Erbarmen angetrieben.
what your wisdom wills, wherever your mercy has urged you.

4

Aria [Tenor]

Violoncello piccolo solo, Continuo

Woferne du den edlen Frieden
Just as you have decreed noble peace
Vor unsern Leib und Stand beschieden,
for our bodies and circumstances,
So laß der Seele doch dein selig machend Wort.
so grant to the soul your word that makes us blessed.
Wenn uns dies Heil begegnet,
If we meet with your salvation,
So sind wir hier gesegnet
then we are blessed here on earth
Und Auserwählte dort!
and chosen people there in heaven!

5

Recitative [Bass] and Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Continuo

Doch weil der Feind bei Tag und Nacht
But since the enemy by day and night
Zu unserm Schaden wacht
watches for our harm
Und unsre Ruhe will verstören,
and wants to disturb our peace,
So wollest du, o Herre Gott, erhören,
may it be your will, o Lord God, to listen to us
Wenn wir in heiliger Gemeine beten:
when we pray in the sacred congregation:

Den Satan unter unsre Füße treten.
Let Satan be trampled beneath our feet.

So bleiben wir zu deinem Ruhm
So we remain, for your praise,
Dein auserwähltes Eigentum
your chosen possession,
Und können auch nach Kreuz und Leiden
and after cross and suffering we can
Zur Herrlichkeit von hinnen scheiden.
depart from here to glory.

6

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Oboe I-III, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Dein ist allein die Ehre,
Yours alone is the honour,
Dein ist allein der Ruhm;
yours alone is the praise;
Geduld im Kreuz uns lehre,
teach us patience in [bearing the] cross,
Regier all unser Tun,
govern all our actions,
Bis wir fröhlich abscheiden
until we joyfully depart
Ins ewig Himmelreich,
to the eternal kingdom of heaven,
Zu wahrem Fried und Freude,
to true peace and joy,
Den Heilgen Gottes gleich.
like the saints of God.
Indes machs mit uns allen
Meanwhile deal with all of us
Nach deinem Wohlgefallen:
according to your pleasure:
Solchs singet heut ohn Scherzen
thus sings today without jests
Die christgläubige Schar
the flock of those who believe in Christ
Und wünscht mit Mund und Herzen
and wishes with voice and heart for
Ein seligs neues Jahr.
a blessed new year.
