This cantata is a setting of all seven strophes of Martin Luther’s Easter hymn, which derives both music and some of the text from the 11th century sequence Victimae paschali laudes (strophes 4 and 5). The rest of Luther’s text is based on scriptural references to the Passover Lamb : 1 Corinthians 5 :7-8; from Romans 3: 10-12; Revelation 12 :7-11; 1Corinthians 15: 54; Isaiah 25:8; Exodus 12 3-29 (especially 7, 12,22-23 and 27). |

Wipo (died 1050) was a Burgundian priest. He was chaplain to the Emperor Conrad II and wrote a chronicle of his reign. He is generally considered to be the author of both the words and the melody of the Easter Sequence Victimae paschali laudes. A sequence is a liturgical chant or hymn sung after the Alleluia and before the Gospel in the Eucharist. |
