1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Oboe I/II e Violino I e Trombone I col Soprano, Violino II e Trombone II coll'Alto, Viola e Trombone III col Tenore, Trombone IV col Basso, Continuo

Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir,
From deep affliction I cry out to you,
Herr Gott, erhör mein Rufen;
Lord God, hear my call;
Dein gnädig Ohr neig her zu mir
incline your merciful ear here to me
Und meiner Bitt sie öffne!
and be open to my prayer!
Denn so du willt das sehen an,
For if you want to look at this,
Was Sünd und Unrecht ist getan,
what sin and injustice is done,
Wer kann, Herr, vor dir bleiben?
who can, Lord, remain before you?

2

Recitative [Alto]

Continuo

In Jesu Gnade wird allein
In Jesus' grace alone will
Der Trost vor uns und die Vergebung sein,
there be consolation for us and forgiveness,
Weil durch des Satans Trug und List
since through Satan’s cunning and deception
Der Menschen ganzes Leben
the whole life of humanity
Vor Gott ein Sündengreuel ist.
is an abomination of sin before God.
Was könnte nun
What can now
Die Geistesfreudigkeit zu unserm Beten geben,
give us spiritual joy along with our prayers,
Wo Jesu Geist und Wort nicht neue Wunder tun?
if Jesus’ word and spirit do not perform new wonders?

3

Aria ]Tenor]

Oboe I/II, Continuo

Ich höre mitten in den Leiden
I hear in the midst of my sufferings
Ein Trostwort, so mein Jesus spricht.
a word of consolation spoken by Jesus.
Drum, o geängstigtes Gemüte,
Therefore, o anguished heart,
Vertraue deines Gottes Güte,
trust in the goodness of your God,
Sein Wort besteht und fehlet nicht,
his word stands firm and does not fail,
Sein Trost wird niemals von dir scheiden!
his consolation will never part from you!

4

Recitative [Soprano]

Continuo

Ach! Daß mein Glaube noch so schwach,
Alas, that my faith is so weak
Und daß ich mein Vertrauen
and that I must build my confidence
Auf feuchtem Grunde muß erbauen!
on waterlogged ground!
Wie ofte müssen neue Zeichen
How often must new signs
Mein Herz erweichen!
soften my heart!
Wie? kennst du deinen Helfer nicht,
What? Do you not know your helper,
Der nur ein einzig Trostwort spricht,
who speaks only a single word of consolation,
Und gleich erscheint,
and immediately appears -
Eh deine Schwachheit es vermeint,
before your weakness notices it
Die Rettungsstunde.
- the hour of rescue.
Vertraue nur der Allmachtshand und seiner Wahrheit Munde!
Trust in the hand of the almighty and the truth of his mouth!

5

Aria (Terzetto) [Soprano, Alto, Bass]

Continuo

Wenn meine Trübsal als mit Ketten
When my sorrow as if with chains
Ein Unglück an dem andern hält,
joins one misfortune to another,
So wird mich doch mein Heil erretten,
then will my saviour rescue me,
Daß alles plötzlich von mir fällt.
so that everything suddenly falls away from me.
Wie bald erscheint des Trostes Morgen
How soon appears a morning of consolation
Auf diese Nacht der Not und Sorgen!
after the affliction and worry of this night!

6

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Oboe I/II e Violino I e Trombone I col Soprano, Violino II e Trombone II coll'Alto, Viola e Trombone III col Tenore, Trombone IV col Basso, Continuo

Ob bei uns ist der Sünden viel,
Although there is much sin among us,
Bei Gott ist viel mehr Gnade;
with God there is much more mercy;
Sein Hand zu helfen hat kein Ziel,
his helping hand has no limit,
Wie groß auch sei der Schade.
however great the harm may be.
Er ist allein der gute Hirt,
He is alone the good shepherd
Der Israel erlösen wird
who can free Israel
Aus seinen Sünden allen.
from all his sins.
