Es erhub sich ein Streit.
There arose a strife.
Die rasende Schlange, der höllische Drache
The raging serpent, the dragon of hell
Stürmt wider den Himmel mit wütender Rache.
storms against heaven with furious revenge.
Aber Michael bezwingt,
But Michael conquers,
Und die Schar, die ihn umringt
and the host which surrounds him
Stürzt des Satans Grausamkeit.
overthrows Satan's cruelty.

The uncreated Michael

and his host of angels

Und seine Stätte wird nicht mehr
and his place is no more

Und wenn uns gleich sein Brüllen schrecket,
and even when his roar terrifies us,
So wird doch unser Leib und Seel
then still our body and soul
Mit Engeln zugedecket.

Encamped both near and far
Um uns der Engel unsers Herrn
around us is the angel of our Lord
Mit Feuer, Roß und Wagen.

Was ist der schnöde Mensch, das Erdenkind?
What is despicable humanity, the child of earth?
Ein Wurm, ein armer Sünder.
A worm, a wretched sinner.
Schaut, wie ihn selbst der Herr so lieb gewinnt,
See, how the Lord himself falls in love with him,
Daß er ihn nicht zu niedrig schätzet
that he does not value him too lowly
Und ihm die Himmelskinder,
and for him places the children of heaven
Der Seraphinen Heer,
the host of Seraphim
Zu seiner Wacht und Gegenwehr,
to watch and fight on his behalf,
Zu seinem Schutze setzet.

Euer großes Heilig singen
to sing of your great holiness
Und dem Höchsten Dank zu singen!
and to sing thanks to the Highest!

Wie Lazrum nach seinem Tod.
like Lazarus after his death.
Laß sie ruhn in deinem Schoß,
Let my soul rest in your bosom
Erfüll sie mit Freud und Trost,
fill it with joy and consolation
Bis der Leib kommt aus der Erde
until my body comes from the earth
Und mit ihr vereinigt werde.
and is united with it.
