English Translation

1

Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele,
und vergiß all Not und Qual,
weil dich nun Christus, dein Herre,
ruft aus diesem Jammertal.
Aus Trübsal und großem Leid
sollst du fahren in die Freud,
die kein Ohr hat je gehöret,
die in Ewigkeit auch währet.

Rejoice greatly, o my soul,
and forget all misery and torment
since Christ your Lord
calls you from this valley of misery!
From affliction and sorrow
you will journey to the joy
no ear has ever heard
that awaits you in eternity

2

Tag und Nacht hab ich gerufen
zu dem Herren, meinem Gott,
weil mich stets viel Kreuz betroffen,
daß er mir helf aus der Not.
Wie sich sehnt ein Wandersmann,
daß sein Weg ein End mög han,
so hab ich gewünschet eben,
daß sich enden mög mein Leben.

Day and night I have called
to the Lord, my God,
because affliction constantly befalls me
so that he may help me
out of my distress.
As a traveller longs
for an end to his journey,
so have I desired an end to my life.

3

Denn gleich wie die Rosen stehen
unter spitzen Dornen gar,
also auch die Christen gehen
in viel Ängsten und Gefahr.
Wie die Meereswellen sind
und der ungestüme Wind,
also ist allhier auf Erden
unser Lauf voller Beschwerden.

For just as roses are found
beneath sharp thorns,
so Christians also go their way
in anguish and danger.
Just as there are sea billows
and vehement wind,
so everywhere on earth
our course is full of troubles.

4

Welt und Teufel, Sünd und Hölle,
unser eigen Fleisch und Blut
plagen stets hier unsre Seele,
lassen uns bei keinem Mut.
Wir sind voller Angst und Plag,
lauter Kreuz sind unsre Tag;
wenn wir nur geboren werden,
Jammer g'nug find't sich auf Erden.

World and devil, sin and hell,
our own flesh and blood
here continually trouble our soul,
leave us no courage.
We are full of anguish and trouble,
our days are simply affliction;
just by being born
we find enough misery on earth.

5

Wenn die Morgenröt herleuchtet
und der Schlaf von uns sich wend't,
Sorg und Kummer daherschleichet,
Müh sich find't an allem End.
Unsre Tränen sind das Brot,
das wir essen früh und spät;
wenn die Sonn nicht mehr tut scheinen,
ist nichts denn nur Klag und Weinen.

As day dawns here
and sleep leaves us
care and worry creep upon us,
everything ends up as trouble.
Our tears are the bread
that we eat early and late.
When the sun shines no more,
there is nothing but lamentation and weeping.

6

Drum, Herr Christ, du Morgensterne,
der du ewiglich aufgehst,
sei von mir auch jetzt nicht ferne,
weil mich dein Blut hat erlöst.
Hilf, daß ich mit Fried und Freud
mög von hinnen fahren heut;
ach sei du mein Licht und Straße,
mich mit Beistand nicht verlasse.

Therefore, Lord Christ, you morning star
that rises forever,
be not far from me also now,
since you have redeemed me with your blood.
Help, so that with peace and joy
I may travel onward today,
ah may you be my light and way,
with your assistance do not abandon me.

7

In dein Seite will ich fliehen
an meinm bittern Todesgang,
durch dein Wunden will ich ziehen
ins himmlische Vaterland.
In das schöne Paradeiß,
drein der Schächer that sein Reiß,
wirst du mich, Herr Christ, einführen,
und mit ewger Klarheit zieren.

To your side I shall flee
at the bitter approach of my death,
through your wounds I shall reach
the heavenly fatherland.
In that beautiful paradise
to which the (repentant) thief (on the cross) made his journey you will lead me, Lord Christ,
and adorn me with eternal clarity.

8

Ob mir schon die Augen brechen,
das Gehör auch gar verschwind't,
meine Zung nicht mehr kann sprechen,
mein Verstand sich nicht besinnt,
bist du doch mein Licht, mein Wort,
Leben, Weg und Himmelspfort;
du wirst selig mich regieren,
die recht Bahn zum Himmel führen.

Although my eyes now fail,
my hearing also vanishes,
my tongue can speak no more,
my mind cannot collect itself,
yet you are my light, my word,
life, way and gate to heaven;
you will rule over me in bliss,
lead me along the right way to heaven.

9

Laß dein’ Engel mit mir fahren
Auf Elias Wagen rot
Und mein Seele wohl bewahren,
Wie Lazrum nach seinem Tod.
Laß sie ruhn in deinem Schoß,
Erfüll sie mit Freud und Trost,
Bis der Leib kommt aus der Erde
Und mit ihr vereinigt werde.

Let your angel travel with me
on Elias’ red chariot
and preserve my soul
like Lazarus after his death.
Let my soul rest in your bosom
fill it with joy and consolation
until my body comes from the earth
and is united with it.

10

Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele,
und vergiß all Not und Qual,
weil dich nun Christus, dein Herre,
ruft aus diesem Jammertal.
Seine Freud und Herrlichkeit
sollst du sehn in Ewigkeit,
mit den Engeln jubilieren,
ewig, ewig triumphieren.

Rejoice greatly, o my soul,
and forget all misery and torment
since Christ your Lord
calls you from this valley of misery!
His joy and splendour
you will see in eternity,
and rejoice with the angels,
triumph in eternity.
