Text for Cantata 137

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Praise the Lord, the mighty King of Glory,
my beloved soul, that is my desire.
Come in throngs
psalter and harp, awake!
Let music be heard.

2. ARIA (Alt)

wie es dir selber gefällt;
hast du nicht dieses verspüret?

Praise the Lord, who reigns over all so splendidly,
who upon pinions of eagles safely guides you,
who preserves you
as it would please you;
have you not perceived this?

der dir Gesundheit verliehen, dich freundlich geleitet;
in wieviel Not
hat nicht der gnädige Gott
über dir Flügel gebreitet!

Praise the Lord, who artfully and finely prepares you
who imparts you health, kindly directing you;
midst so much distress
has not the merciful God
spread his wings over you!

4. ARIA (Tenor)

der aus dem Himmel mit Strömen der Liebe geregnet;
denke dran,
was der Allmächtige kann,
der dir mit Liebe begegnet.

Praise the Lord,
who clearly has blessed your position,
who rains streams of love from the heavens;
ponder on this,
what the Almighty can do,
who confronts you with love.

5. CHORAL

Seele, vergiß es ja nicht;
Lobende, schließe mit Amen!

Praise the Lord, all within me, praise his name!
All that has breath, praise, with Abrahamís seed!
He is your light,
soul, yes, do not forget this;
worshiper, close with Amen!
