1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Corno col Soprano, Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost,
Ah, dear Christians, be consoled,
Wie tut ihr so verzagen!
how you continue to be so disheartened !
Weil uns der Herr heimsuchen tut,
Since the Lord afflicts us,
Laßt uns von Herzen sagen:
let us say from our hearts:
Die Straf wir wohl verdienet han,
we have well deserved the punishment,
Solchs muß bekennen jedermann,
this must be confessed by everyone,
Niemand darf sich ausschließen.
no one may excude himself.

2

Aria [Tenor]

Flauto traverso solo, Continuo

Wo wird in diesem Jammertale
Where will there be in this valley of misery
Vor meinen Geist die Zuflucht sein?
a refuge for my spirit?
Allein zu Jesu Vaterhänden
Only to Jesus' fatherly hands
Will ich mich in der Schwachheit wenden;
do I want to entrust myself in my weakness;
Sonst weiß ich weder aus noch ein.
otherwise I do not know where to turn.

3

Recitative [Bass]

Continuo

O Sünder, trage mit Geduld,
O sinner, bear with patience
Was du durch deine Schuld
what you through your own guilt
Dir selber zugezogen!
have brought upon yourself!
Das Unrecht säufst du ja
Indeed you drink up injustice
Wie Wasser in dich ein,
just like water
Und diese Sündenwassersucht
and this overpowering thirst for sin
Ist zum Verderben da
is there for your destruction
Und wird dir tödlich sein.
and will be fatal for you
Der Hochmut aß vordem von der verbotnen Frucht,
Arrogance in days of old ate of the forbidden fruit
Gott gleich zu werden;
to become like God.
Wie oft erhebst du dich mit schwülstigen Gebärden,
How often you rise up in revolt with pompous gestures,
Daß du erniedrigt werden mußt.
so that you must be cast down.
Wohlan, bereite deine Brust,
Come, prepare your heart
Daß sie den Tod und Grab nicht scheut,
so that it does not shun in fear death and the grave,
So kömmst du durch ein selig Sterben
in this way through dying in blessedness you may come
Aus diesem sündlichen Verderben
from this sinful corruption
Zur Unschuld und zur Herrlichkeit.
to innocence and glory.

4

Chorale [Soprano]

Continuo

Kein Frucht das Weizenkörnlein bringt,
The tiny grain of wheat bears no fruit
Es fall denn in die Erden;
unless it falls into the ground;
So muß auch unser irdscher Leib
in this way also must our earthly body
Zu Staub und Aschen werden,
become dust and ashes
Eh er kömmt zu der Herrlichkeit,
before it comes to the glory
Die du, Herr Christ, uns hast bereit'
that you, Lord Christ, have prepared for us
Durch deinen Gang zum Vater.
through your journey to the Father.

5

Aria [Alto]

Oboe I, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Du machst, o Tod, mir nun nicht ferner bange,
You make me, O death, no longer afraid,
Wenn ich durch dich die Freiheit nur erlange,
if it is through you that I achieve freedom,
Es muß ja so einmal gestorben sein.
for this reason once and for all I must die.
Mit Simeon will ich in Friede fahren,
With Simeon I want to travel in peace,
Mein Heiland will mich in der Gruft bewahren
my saviour will protect me in the grave
Und ruft mich einst zu sich verklärt und rein.
and one day call me to himself [when I am] transfigured and pure.

6

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Indes bedenke deine Seele
Meanwhile take thought for your soul
Und stelle sie dem Heiland dar;
and present it to your saviour;
Gib deinen Leib und deine Glieder
give back your body and limbs
Gott, der sie dir gegeben, wieder.
to God, who gave them to you.
Er sorgt und wacht,
He cares and watches,
Und so wird seiner Liebe Macht
and so the power of his love will be
Im Tod und Leben offenbar.
made clear in life and death.

7

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Corno e Oboe I/II e Violino I col Soprano, Violino II coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Continuo

Wir wachen oder schlafen ein,
Whether we wake or sleep
So sind wir doch des Herren;
we belong to the Lord;
Auf Christum wir getaufet sein,
we have been baptised in Christ
Der kann dem Satan wehren.
who can protect us from Satan.
Durch Adam auf uns kömmt der Tod,
Through Adam death comes to us,
Christus hilft uns aus aller Not.
Christ helps us in all our troubles,
Drum loben wir den Herren.
therefore we praise the Lord.
