Nicolette Moonen (Violin, Musical Director)

Born: Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The Dutch-born violinist, Nicolette Moonen, grew up in Amsterdam bilingually, in a Dutch-French musical family - which later encouraged her to learn the main European languages. She studied with Jaap Schröder and Sigiswald Kuijken. In 1992 she moved to live in London. Her taste in music has been shaped by a love of languages, and she is passionate about the connection between language and music. She has a special affinity for French music.

Nicolette Moonen has played with most British and other European Baroque orchestras, including the Leonhardt-Consort (Director: Gustav Leonhardt), Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Director: Ton Koopman), English Baroque Soloists (Director: John Eliot Gardiner), Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Purcell Quartet (Director: Robert Woolley), Florilegium (Director: Ashley Solomon) and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, amongst others. She has been invited to lead ensembles such as Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe), La Chapelle Royale (Director: Philippe Herreweghe), Ex Cathedra (Director: Jeffrey Skidmore), European Union Baroque Orchestra and the English Touring Opera.

In 1996 Nicolette Moonen founded The Bach Players of which she is the artistic director. The group has a regular concert series in London and Norwich and has performed all over the UK, Ireland, and in continental Europe. Their concert programmes paint pictures of musical issues and themes of 17th- and 18th-century Europe. In 2008 the ensemble started to make recordings of these programmes. So far, 10 CD's have been released on the Hyphen Press Music label. She has a duo since a few years with German harpsichordist Medea Bindewald. Together they like exploring the genre of ‘Pièces de clavecin avec accompagnement de violon’. They released two CD's on the Coviello label: 1, Jacques Duphly 2, Jacob Kirkman

Nicolette Moonen teaches violin, string classes and regularly coaches ensembles at the Royal Academy of Music and directed the Baroque orchestra at Dartington International Summer School from 1998 to 2013.
