Chorus [S, S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Oboe I-III, Taille, Fagotto, Violino I/II, Viola I/II, Viloncello I/II, Continuo

Der Himmel lacht! die Erde jubilieret
Und was sie trägt in ihrem Schoß;
Der Schöpfer lebt! der Höchste triumphieret
Und ist von Todesbanden los.
Der sich das Grab zur Ruh erlesen,
Der Heiligste kann nicht verwesen.

The heavens laugh! The earth shouts with joy
and what she bears in her bosom.
The creator lives! God most high triumphs
and is free from the bonds of death.

He who has chosen the grave for rest,
the Holiest, cannot decay.

Recitativo B

Recitative [Bass]

Violoncello II, Continuo

Erwünschter Tag! sei, Seele, wieder froh!
Das A und O,
Der erst und auch der letzte,
Den unsre schwere Schuld in Todeskerker setzte,
Ist nun gerissen aus der Not!
Der Herr war tot,
Und sieh, er lebet wieder;
Lebt unser Haupt, so leben auch die Glieder.
Der Herr hat in der Hand
Des Todes und der Hölle Schlüssel!
Der sein Gewand
Blutrot bespritzt in seinem bittern Leiden,
Will heute sich mit Schmuck und Ehren kleiden.

Longed for day ! Be joyful again, soul !
The alpha and omega
the first and also the last,
whom our heavy guilt put in death's prison,
is now torn away from misery!
The Lord was dead
and see, he lives again.
If our head lives, the limbs live also.
The Lord has in his hand
the keys of death and hell!
He who his garments
sprinkled bloodred in his bitter sufferings
wants today to be clothed with adornment and honour.

Aria B

Aria [Bass]

Violoncello II, Continuo

Fürst des Lebens, starker Streiter,
Hochgelobter Gottessohn!
Hebet dich des Kreuzes Leiter
Auf den höchsten Ehrenthron?
Wird, was dich zuvor gebunden,
Nun dein Schmuck und Edelstein?
Müssen deine Purpurwunden
Deiner Klarheit Strahlen sein?

Prince of life, mighty champion,
highly praised Son of God !
Does the ladder of the cross raise you
to the highest throne of honour ?
Will what before bound you
now be your adornment and precious stone ?

Must your purple wounds
be beams of your radiance?

Recitativo T

5

Recitative [Tenor]

Violoncello II, Continuo

So stehe dann, du gottergebne Seele,
Mit Christo geistlich auf!
Tritt an den neuen Lebenslauf!
Auf! von des Todes Werken!
Laß, dass dein Heiland in der Welt,
An deinem Leben merken!
Der Weinstock, der jetzt blüht,
Trägt keine tote Reben!
Der Lebensbaum lässt seine Zweige leben!
Ein Christe flieht
Ganz eilend von dem Grabe!
Er lässt den Stein,
Er lässt das Tuch der Sünden
Dahinten
Und will mit Christo lebend sein.

So now, you soul devoted to God,
rise up with Christ in your spirit!
Enter on the new way of life!
Up! Away from death's works!

Make your saviour in the world
be seen in your life
The vine-stock, that blooms now,
bears no dead grapes!
The tree of life lets its branches live!
A Christian flees
in a great hurry from the grave!
He leaves behind the stone,
he leaves the shroud of sins
behind him
and wants to be alive with Christ.

Aria T

6

Aria [Tenor]

Violino I/II, Viola I/II, Viloncello I/II, Continuo

Adam muss in uns verwesen,
Soll der neue Mensch genesen,
Der nach Gott geschahen ist.
Du musst geistlich auferstehen
Und aus Sündengräbern gehen,
Wenn du Christi Gliedmaß bist.

Adam must in us decay,
the new man should grow stronger.
who is created after the image of God.
You must arise in spirit
and leave the grave of sins
if you are a member of Christ.

Recitativo S

7

Recitative [Soprano]

Violoncello II, Continuo

Weil dann das Haupt sein Glied
Natürlich nach sich zieht,
So kann mich nichts von Jesu scheiden.
Muß ich mit Christo leiden,
So werd ich auch nach dieser Zeit
Mit Christo wieder auferstehen
Zur Ehr und Herrlichkeit
Und Gott in meinem Fleische sehen.

For since the head
naturally takes his limbs with him,

nothing then can separate me from Jesus.
If I must suffer with Christ,
so shall I also after this time
rise again with Christ
to honour and glory

and see God in my flesh.

Aria (e Choral) S

8

Aria (and Chorale) [Soprano]

Oboe, Violino I/II all' unisono, Viola I/II all' unisono, Violoncello II, Continuo

Letzte Stunde, brich herein,
Mir die Augen zuzudrücken!
Laß mich Jesu Freudenschein
Und sein helles Licht erblicken,
Laß mich Engeln ähnlich sein!
Letzte Stunde, brich herein!

Last hour, break now upon me
to close my eyes!
Let me gaze on the joyous radiance of Jesus
and his bright light
Let me be like the angels!
Last hour, break upon me!

Choral

Chorale [S, S, A, T, B]

Tromba I, Oboe I-III, Taille, Fagotto, Violino I/II, Viola I/II, Viloncello I/II, Continuo

So fahr ich hin zu Jesu Christ,
Mein' Arm tu ich ausstrecken;
So schlaf ich ein und ruhe fein,
Kein Mensch kann mich aufwecken,
Denn Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,
Der wird die Himmelstür auftun,
Mich führn zum ewgen Leben.

In this way I shall journey towards Jesus Christ:
I shall stretch out my arms towards him;

so I shall sleep and rest pleasantly,
no man can awaken me,
other than Jesus Christ, God's son,
he who will open the door of heaven for me,
and lead me to the eternal life [that has been promised].
