Text for Cantata 122
Das neugeborne Kindelein

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Das neugeborne Kindelein,
das herzeliebe Jesulein
bringt abermal ein neues Jahr
der auserwählten Christenschar.

The newborn little child,
the beloved baby Jesus,
offers a new year once again
for the chosen Christian throng.

2. ARIA (Baß)

O Menschen, die ihr täglich sündigt,
ihr sollt der Engel Freude sein.
Ihr jubilierendes Geschrei,
daß Gott mit euch versöhnet sei,
hat euch den süßen Trost verkündigt.

O humanity, you who sin daily,
you shall be the joy of angels.
Their jubilant announcement
that God be reconciled to you
has proclaimed sweet comfort for you.

3. REZITATIV (Sopran)

Die Engel, welche sich zuvor
vor euch als vor Verfluchten scheuen,
erfüllen nun die Luft im höhern Chor,
um über euer Heil sich zu erfreuen.
Gott, so euch aus dem Paradies
aus englischer Gemeinschaft stieß,
läßt euch nun wiederum auf Erden
durch seine Gegenwart vollkommen selig werden:
so danket nun mit vollem Munde
vor die gewünschte Zeit im neuen Bunde!

The angels who previously
shunned you as those condemned,
now fill the air in lofty chorus,
rejoicing for your salvation.
God, having expelled you from paradise,
away from the communion of angels,
now conversely lets you remain on earth
fully blessed by his presence:
so now give thanks with full voice
at this desirable time in the new covenant!

4. CHORAL (Alt); ARIA (Sopran, Tenor)

(Chorale is shown in bold text)

Ist Gott versöhnt und unser Freund,
O wohl uns, die wir an ihn glauben,
was kann uns tun der arge Feind?
sein Grimm kann unsern Trost nicht rauben;
Trotz Teufel und der Höllen Pfort,
ihr Wüten wird sie wenig nützen,
das Jesulein ist unser Hort.
Gott ist mit uns und will uns schützen.

If God is reconciled and is our friend,
O blessed are we who believe in him,
what can the spiteful foe do to us?
his wrath cannot rob us of assurance;
Despite the Devil and the gates of hell,
their fury will have little effect,
the baby Jesus is our refuge.
God is with us and will protect us.

This is a day which the Lord himself has made,
on which he assigns his Son to this world.
O blessed time now fulfilled!
O faithful waiting henceforth stilled!
O faith which beholds its goal!
O love which God draws unto himself!
O joyousness, so penetrating the gloom
and bringing God an offering by the lips!

6. CHORAL

Es bringt das rechte Jubeljahr,
was trauern wir denn immerdar?
Frisch auf! itzt ist es Singens Zeit,
das Jesulein wendt alles Leid.

A proper year of jubilee ensues,
what is left for us to grieve?
Rise afresh! now is the time for singing
the baby Jesus averts all sorrow.
