German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1

Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
mein Hoffnung steht auf Erden.
Ich weiß, daß du mein Tröster bist,
kein Trost mag mir sonst werden.
Von Anbeginn ist nichts erkorn,
auf Erden ward kein Mensch geborn,
der mir aus Nöten helfen kann;
ich ruf dich an,
zu dem ich mein Vertrauen han.

On you alone, Lord Jesus Christ,
My hope on earth depends,
I know that you are my comforter,
there is no comfort for me elsewhere,
from the beginning is nothing chosen,
no man has been born on earth,
that can help me out of my distress,
I call to you,
In whom I have my trust.

2

Mein Sünd' sind schwer und übergroß
und reuen mich von Herzen;
derselben mach mich frei und los
durch deinen Tod und Schmerzen;
und zeige deinem Vater an,
daß du hast g'nug für mich getan,
so werd ich los der Sünden Last.
Erhalt mich fest
in dem, was du versprochen hast.

My sins are heavy and excessive
And I regret them from my heart;
from these make me free and clear
through your death and pain
And show to your father
that you have done enough for me,
So that I shall be free from the burden of sin.
Keep me firmly
In him whom you have promised

3

Gib mir durch dein Barmherzigkeit
den wahren Christenglauben,
auf daß ich deine Gütigkeit
mög inniglich anschauen,
vor allen Dingen lieben dich
und meinen Nächsten gleich wie mich.
Am letzten End dein Hilf mir send,
damit behend
des Teufels List sich von mir wend.

Give me through your compassion
true Christian belief
so that your goodness
I may see intimately,
before all things love you
and my neighbour as myself.
At my final end send your help,
by this swiftly
save me from the Devil's deceit .

4

Ehr sei Gott in dem höchsten Thron,
dem Vater aller Güte,
und Jesus Christ, seim lieben Sohn,
der uns allzeit behüte,
und Gott, dem werten Heilgen Geist,
der uns allzeit sein Hilfe leist,
daß wir ihm wohlgefällig sein
hier in der Zeit
und folgen ihm in Ewigkeit.

Honour be to God on his highest throne,
the father of all goodness,
and to Jesus Christ, his dear son,
Who at all times watches over us
and to God,the revered Holy Spirit,
So that we may be
well pleasing to him,
here in time
and follow him in the eternity
