1. CHORAL |
|
Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam
nach seines Vaters Willen,
von Sankt Johannes die Taufe nahm,
sein Werk und Amt zu erfüllen;
da wollt er stiften uns ein Bad,
zu waschen uns von Sünden,
ersäufen auch den bittern Tod
durch sein selbst Blut und Wunden;
es galt ein neues Leben. |
Christ our Lord came to the Jordan
according to his Father’s will,
he received baptism from St. John,
inaugurating his work and office;
by this he desired to establish a font for us
to cleanse us of sin,
drowning bitter death as well
through his own blood and wounds;
this ascertained a new life. |

|
Merkt und hört, ihr Menschenkinder,
was Gott selbst die Taufe heißt!
Es muß zwar hier Wasser sein,
doch schlecht Wasser nicht allein.
Gottes Wort und Gottes Geist
tauft und reiniget die Sünder. |
Take note and hear, you children of humanity,
how God himself defines baptism!
There must of course be water present,
but not mere water alone.
God’s word and God’s Spirit
immerse and purify the sinner. |

|
Dies hat Gott klar
mit Worten und mit Bildern dargetan,
am Jordan ließ der Vater offenbar
die Stimme bei der Taufe Christi hören;
er sprach: Dies ist mein lieber Sohn,
an diesem hab ich Wohlgefallen,
er ist vom hohen Himmelsthron
der Welt zugut
in niedriger Gestalt gekommen
und hat das Fleisch und Blut
der Menschenkinder angenommen;
den nehmet nun als euren Heiland an,
und höret seine teuren Lehren! |
God clearly demonstrated this
through words and visuals,
at the Jordan as Jesus was baptized,
the Father publically let his voice be heard
he spoke: This is my beloved Son,
in whom I am well-pleased,
he is come from heaven's high throne
for the good of the world
in humble form, and has assumed
the flesh and blood
of the children of humanity;
receive him now as your Savior,
and hear his valuable instruction! |

|
Des Vaters Stimme ließ sich hören,
der Sohn, der uns mit Blut erkauft,
ward als ein wahrer Mensch getauft.
Der Geist erschien im Bild der Tauben,
damit wir ohne Zweifel glauben,
es habe die Dreifaltigkeit
uns selbst die Taufe zubereit'. |
The Father’s voice itself was heard,
the Son, who purchased us with his blood,
was baptized as a real human being.
The Spirit appeared in the form of a dove
so that we might believe without any doubt
that the Trinity itself
has ordained baptism for us. |

Als Jesus dort nach seinen Leiden
und nach dem Auferstehn
aus dieser Welt zum Vater wollte gehn,
sprach er zu seinen Jüngern:
geht hin in alle Welt und lehret alle Heiden,
wer glaubet und getaufet wird auf Erden,
der soll gerecht und selig werden. |
Following his passion and resurrection,
when Jesus desired to depart this world
for the Father,
he spoke to his disciples:
Go forth into all the world and instruct all gentiles,
that whoever upon earth believes and is baptized
shall be made righteous and blessed. |

|
Menschen, glaubt doch dieser Gnade,
daß ihr nicht in Sunden sterbt,
noch im Höllenpfuhl verderbt!
Menschenwerk und -heiligkeit
gilt vor Gott zu keiner Zeit.
Sünden sind uns angeboren,
wir sind von Natur verloren;
Glaub und Taufe macht sie rein,
daß sie nicht verdammlich sein. |
Humanity, do believe in this mercy,
so that you not die in sin
nor fester in the slough of hell!
Human deeds and saintliness
never mean a thing to God.
Sinning is inherent to us,
we are lost by nature;
belief and baptism make them clean
so that they not be condemned. |

|
Das Aug allein das Wasser sieht,
wie Menschen Wasser gießen,
der Glaub allein die Kraft versteht
des Blutes Jesu Christi,
und ist für ihm ein rote Flut
von Christi Blut gefärbet,
die allen Schaden heilet gut
von Adam her geerbet,
auch von uns selbst begangen. |
The eye perceives only the water
for humans can pour water,
faith alone comprehends the power
of the blood of Jesus Christ,
and it is [for faith] a red tide
colored by Christ’s blood
which heals well all damages
inherited from Adam,
as well as those initiated by us. |
