Coro

1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Corno da caccia I/II, Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Ratschluss der Götter:
Laßt uns sorgen, lasst uns wachen
Über unsern Göttersohn.
Unser Thron
Wird auf Erden
Herrlich und verkläret werden,
Unser Thron Wird aus ihm ein Wunder machen.

Council of the Gods:
Let us take care, let us keep watch
over our son of the gods.
Our throne
will on earth
become glorious and transfigured,
our throne will make a wonder from him.

Recitativo A

2

Recitative [Alto]

Continuo

Herkules:
Und wo? Wo ist die rechte Bahn,
Da ich den eingepflanzten Trieb,
Dem Tugend, Glanz und Ruhm und Hoheit lieb,
Zu seinem Ziele bringen kann?
Vernunft, Verstand und Licht
Begehrt, dem allen nachzujagen.
Ihr schlanken Zweige, könnt ihr nicht
Rat oder Weise sagen?

Hercules:
And where? Where is the right way,
whereby the impulse planted within me,
which is dear to virtue, splendour, renown and majesty,
can be brought to its goal?
Reason, understanding and enlightenment
are eager to pursue all of this.
You narrow cross-roads, can you not
give me advice or a way?

Aria S

3

Aria [Soprano]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Wollust:
Schlafe, mein Liebster, und pflege der Ruh,
Folge der Lockung entbrannter Gedanken.
Schmecke die Lust
Der lüsternen Brust
Und erkenne keine Schranken.

Pleasure:
Sleep, my darling, and get used to ease,
follow the enticement of inflamed thoughts.
Savour the delight
of a lustful heart
and recognise no limits.

Recitativo S T

4

Recitative [Soprano, Tenor]

Continuo

Wollust:
Auf! folge meiner Bahn,
Da ich dich ohne Last und Zwang
Mit sanften Tritten werde leiten.
Die Anmut gehet schon voran,
Die Rosen vor dir auszubreiten.
Verziehe nicht, den so bequemen Gang
Mit Freuden zu erwählen.

Pleasure:
Come on, follow my way,
where without any burden and compulsion
I shall lead you with gentle steps.
Charm goes on ahead
to spread roses before you.
Don't hesitate, so comfortable a path
to choose with joy.

Tugend:
Wohin, mein Herkules, wohin?
Du wirst des rechten Weges fehlen.
Durch Tugend, Müh und Fleiß
Erhebet sich ein edler Sinn.

Virtue:
Where are you going, my Hercules, where are you going?
You will miss the right way.
Through virtue, effort and hard work

a noble mind is exalted.

Wollust:
Wer wählet sich den Schweiß,
Der in Gemächlichkeit
Und scherzender Zufriedenheit
Sich kann sein wahres Heil erwerben?

Pleasure:
Who would choose sweat and toil
when in leisure
and lighthearted contentment
he can gain his true well-being?

Tugend:
Das heißt: sein wahres Heil verderben.

Virtue:
That means : destroy his true well-being.

5

Aria A

5

Aria [Alto]

Oboe d'amore, Continuo

Herkules:
Treues Echo dieser Orten,
Sollt ich bei den Schmeichelworten
Süßer Leitung irrig sein?
Gib mir deine Antwort: Nein!
Echo: Nein!
Herkules:
Oder sollte das Ermahnen,
Das so mancher Arbeit nah,
Mir die Wege besser bahnen?
Ach! so sage lieber: Ja!
Echo: Ja!

Hercules:
Faithful Echo of these places,
Should I by the flattering words
of sweet guidance be led astray?
Give me your repy : No!
Echo: No!
Hercules:
Or would the exhortation
that involves so much work
better show me the way?
Ah! then rather say :Yes!
Echo: Yes!

Recitativo T

6

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Tugend:
Mein hoffnungsvoller Held!
Dem ich ja selbst verwandt
Und angeboren bin,
Komm und erfasse meine Hand
Und höre mein getreues Raten,
Das dir der Väter Ruhm und Taten
Im Spiegel vor die Augen stellt.
Ich fasse dich und fühle schon
Die folgbare und mir geweihte Jugend.
Du bist mein echter Sohn,
Ich deine Zeugerin, die Tugend.

Virtue:
My hero full of hope!
To you indeed I am related
and you are mine from birth.
Come and seize my hand
and listen to my faithful advice
that for you presents your fathers' fame and achievements
in a mirror before your eyes
I embrace you and feel already
that your youth is devoted and obedient to me.
You are my true son,
it is I, Virtue, who have begotten you.

Aria T

7

Aria [Tenor]

Oboe I, Violino I, Continuo

Tugend:
Auf meinen Flügeln sollst du schweben,
Auf meinem Fittich steigest du
Den Sternen wie ein Adler zu.
Und durch mich
Soll dein Glanz und Schimmer sich
Zur Vollkommenheit erheben.

Virtue:
On my wings you will soar aloft,
on my pinions you will mount
to the stars like an eagle.
And through me
your glory and splendour
will be raised to perfection.

8

Recitativo T

8

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Tugend:
Die weiche Wollust locket zwar;
Allein,
Wer kennt nicht die Gefahr,
Die Reich und Helden kränkt,
Wer weiß nicht, o Verführerin,
Dass du vorlängst und künftighin,
So lang es nur den Zeiten denkt,
Von unsrer Götter Schar
Auf ewig musst verstoßen sein?

Virtue:
Soft pleasure is indeed seductive;
But
who does not know the danger
that harms kingdoms and heroes,
who does not know, o temptress,
that long since and long hence,
for all the time that can be imagined,
from our assembly of gods
you must be forever banished?

Aria A

9

Aria [Alto]

Violino I, Continuo

Herkules:
Ich will dich nicht hören,
ich will dich nicht wissen,
Verworfene Wollust, ich kenne dich nicht.
Denn die Schlangen,
So mich wollten wiegend fangen,
Hab ich schon lange zermalmet, zerrissen.

Hercules:
I do not want to listen to you, I do not want to be acquainted with you,
degenerate Pleasure, I do not know you.
For the serpents
that wanted to catch me in my cradle
I have long ago crushed and torn to pieces.

Recitativo A T

10

Recitative [Alto, Tenor]

Continuo

Herkules:
Geliebte Tugend, du allein
Sollst meine Leiterin
Beständig sein.
Wo du befiehlst, da geh ich hin,
Das will ich mir zur Richtschnur wählen.

Hercules:
Beloved Virtue, you alone
shall be
my constant guide.
Where you order, that way I shall go.
I want to choose this as my guiding principle.

Tugend:
Und ich will mich mit dir
So fest und so genau vermählen,
Dass ohne dir und mir
Mein Wesen niemand soll erkennen.

Virtue:
And I shall be married to you
so firmly and so closely
that without you and me
no one shall know my nature.

Beide:
Wer will ein solches Bündnis trennen?

Both:
Who will divide such a union?

11

Aria (Duetto) A T

11

Aria (Duet) [Alto, Tenor]

Viola I/II, Continuo

Herkules:
Ich bin deine,

Hercules:
I am yours,

Tugend:
Du bist meine,

Virtue:
you are mine

Beide:
Küsse mich,
Ich küsse dich.
Wie Verlobte sich verbinden,
Wie die Lust, die sie empfinden,
Treu und zart und eiferig,
So bin ich.

Both:
Kiss me,
I kiss you.
As those betrothed are united,
as the delight that they feel,
faithful and tender and enthusiastic,
so am I.

12

Recitativo B

12

Recitative [Bass]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Merkur:
Schaut, Götter, dieses ist ein Bild
Von Sachsens Kurprinz Friedrichs Jugend!
Der muntern Jahre Lauf
Weckt die Verwunderung schon itzund auf.
So mancher Tritt, so manche Tugend.

Mercury:
Behold, Gods, this is an image
of the youth of Friedrich, the elective heir of Saxony.
His lively course of years
already arouses admiration.
So many steps, so much virtue.
Behold, how the loyal land is filled with joy
as it sees the flight of the young eagle,
as it sees this diamond of a jewel
and as the prince so full of promise
prospers to the joy of everybody.
But see also the joyous gathering of the Muses
and hear their delight as they sing:

Coro e Arioso B

13

Chorus of the Muses [S, A, T, B] and Arioso [Bass]

Corno I/II, Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola,

Chor der Musen:
Lust der Völker, Lust der Deinen,
Blühe, holder Friederich!

Chorus of the Muses:
Delight of nations, delight of your people,
prosper, noble Friedrich!

Merkur:
Deiner Tugend Würdigkeit
Stehet schon der Glanz bereit,
Und die Zeit
Ist begierig zu erscheinen:
Eile, mein Friedrich, sie wartet auf dich.

Mercury:
The merit of your virtue
is now ready for glory
and time
is eager to appear:
make haste, Friedrich, it waits for you.
