I know where I'll try to be on April 3rd 2004.

I received this information from the website of La Petite Bande: recording/captation by Radio France of the SMP OVPP performance by La Petite Bande conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken in Paris, on Saturday April 3rd 2004.I'm trying to know if the singers have already been selected, and which label will release it. I'll let you know if I get the information.

Which site Paul? I know http://www.lapetitebande.be/index_eng.html but I can't find here the (precious..) info you gave us.

Paul Dirmeikis wrote (May 13, 2003):
[To Riccardo Nughes] Actually, it isn't on the site. It is a personal e-mailed answer from someone named Helene, to a question I sent to the contact address of this website.

Kuijken SMP OVPP (Paris, April 3, 2004)

Paul Dirmeikis wrote (May 13, 2003):
I just received this new information from Helene Jacobs (La Petite Bande website):

"There will be no live recording by a record company; only the captation by Radio France.

The singers will be :

Chorus I
Inge Van de Kerkhove, soprano
Petra Noskaiová, alto
Jens Weber, tenor I & Evangelist
Marcus Niedermeyr, bass I & Jesus

Chorus II
Marie Kuijken, soprano
Patrizia Hardt,alto
Christophe Einhorn,tenor
Jan Van der Crabben, bass "

Personal comment: strange, no countertenor again, as with Paul McCreesh... I wonder why.

It's a shame that no label is interested in recording and releasing this performance. Well, our tape recorders will be working on that evening.

SMP by Kuijken on France Musiques

Paul Dirmeikis wrote (June 26, 2004):
An interesting info : French radio France Musiques will broadcast the SMP with La Petite Bande and Sigiswald Kuijken (performed in Paris last April 3rd) on Sunday July 18th at 20:00. This radio is available through the Internet (francemusiques.com).

The singers are :
Jens Weber, Evangelist
Inge Van de Kerhove & Marie Kuijken, sopranos
Petra Noskaiova & Patrizia Hardt, altos
Christoph Einhorn, tenor
Jan Van der Crabben, bass.

It's an OVPP performance. Surely worth a listening and a recording, because I very much doubt any label will release it.

Uri Golomb wrote (June 26, 2004):
[To Paul Dirmeikis] If so, then there should be at least one more bass... and who sings the soprano-in-ripieno?

Paul Dirmeikis wrote (June 26, 2004):
[To Uri Golomb] Yes, the second bass wasn't mentionned on the magazine where I got the info. A research on France Musiques's website gave me the name of Marcus Niedermeyer as second bass (Jesus). But nothing about any soprano in ripieno. I guess the part is played on organ as in the McCreesh recording

Charles Francis wrote (June 26, 2004):
[To Paul Dirmeikis] Thanks for this - I'm very fond of Kuijken's OVPP CD.

Indeed. I'm sure you are right that there won't be a commercial recording. What a great shame.

Charles Francis wrote (June 26, 2004):
I am grateful to Paul Dirmeikis of the Bach Recordings group for posting the following information:

I note, Kuijken was a late convert to One Voice Per Part and has released a very nice CD of Bach cantatas performed in this manner; the radio performance, I understand, is likewise OVPP. Issues of historical authenticity aside, Kuijken is part of a family of excellent musicians, so we may expect something different here.

For those holding a Digital Radio subscription which includes France Musiques, they can listen to the performance in CD quality.

Maybe so ... maybe not ...

I agree that it's unlikely that any label will pay Kuijken and all those musicians to go into a studio for recording sessions. But Naive has a Radio France series that consists entirely of concerts broadcast on France Musiques and subsequently transferred onto CDs and released commercially.

I don't know of any plans in place yet to release this SMP. (I asked once, before the concert, and got no answer either way.) But if you really want to see this SMP released on CD, it couldn't hurt to write both Naive and La Petite Bande and tell them you hope that concert broadcast can be released commercially. (It would probably make sense to wait to do this until after the broadcast.)
