English Translation

1

Herr Jesu Christ ich schreie zu dir
Mit ganz betrübter Seele:
Dein Allmacht laß erscheinen mir
Und mich nicht also quäle.
Viel grösser ist die Angst und Schmerz.
So anficht und turbirt mein Herz,
Als daß ich kan erzählen.

Lord Jesus Christ, I cry to you
With a soul that is wholly troubled:
Let your almighty power appear to me
And do not punish me in this way.
Far greater is the anguish and pain
That challenge and confuse my heart
Than I can explain

2

Herr Jesu Christ, erbarm dich mein
Durch deine grosse Gütte;
Mit Erquickung und Hülff erschein
Meim traurigen Gemüte,
Welche elendiglich wird geplagt
Und, so du nicht hilffst, gar verzagt,
Dieweils kein Trost kan finden.

Lord Jesus Christ, have pity on me
Through your great goodness.
With relief and help appear
To my sorrowful spirit
Which is piteously tormented
And unless you help is so disheartened
That in the meantime it can find no comfort

3

HErr Jesu Christ, groß ist die Noth
Darin ich jetzt thu stecken;
Ach hilff, mein allerliebster Gott,
Schlaff nicht, laß dich erwecken.
Niemand ist, der mir helffen kan,
Kein Creatur sich mein nimbt an,
Ich darffs auch niemand klagen.

Lord Jesus Christ, great is the distress
In which I have now got myself;
Ah help me, my most beloved God
Do not sleep but be wakeful.
There is no one who can help me,
no created being who takes care of me,
I may lament to nobody

4

HErr Jesu Christ, du bist allein
Mein Hoffnung und mein Leben,
Drumb will ich in die Hulde dein
Mich ganz und gar ergeben.
O Herr, laß meine Zuversicht
Auf dich zu schänden werden nicht,
Sonst bin ich ganz verlassen.

Lord Jesus Christ, you are alone
my hope and my life
Therefore to your mercy I wish
To entrust myself completely.
O Lord,do not let my confidence in you
Be put to shame,
Otherwise I am entirely forsaken.

5

HErr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn,
Zu dir steht mein vertrauen;
Du bist der rechte GnadenThron:
Wer nur auf dich thut bauen,
Dem stehst du bey in aller Noth,
Hilffst ihm im Leben und im Tod,
Darauf ich mich verlasse.

Lord Jesus Christ, God’s son,
my confidence is based on you;
You are the throne of grace.
The person who builds only on you
you stand by in all distress,
help him in life and death,
on this I depend

6

HErr Jesu Christ, das Elend mein
Thu gnädiglich ansehen,
Durch die heilign fünff Wunden dein
Hör mein Gebet und flehen,
Welchs Tag und Nacht mit Angst und Schmerz
Zu dir außgeust mein traurigs Herz:
Ach laß dichs doch erbarmen.

Lord Jesus Christ, my misery
Graciously behold,
Through your holy five wounds
Hear my prayer and pleading
Which day and night with grief and pain
My mournful heart pours out to you:
Ah the have pity on my misery,

7

HErr Jesu Christ, wenn es ist Zeit
Nach deinem wohlgefallen,
Hilff mir durch dein Barmherzigkeit
Aus meinen engsten allen.
Zerstör den Anschlag meiner Feind,
Die mir zu starck und mächtig seind,
Laß mich nicht unterdrücken.

Lord Jesus Christ, if it is time
According to your good pleasure
Help me through your compassion
In all my narrow straits.
Destroy the attack of my enemies
Who for me are too strong and mighty,
Do not let me be overwhelmed.

8

HErr Jesu Christ, die Gschwister mein
Mit Leib und auch der Seelen
In die Hulde und Gnade dein
Ich thu treulich befehlen.
Schütz sie durch dein Barmherzigkeit
Und wend in Freud mein grosses Leid,
Welchs ich dir sehnlich klage.

Lord Jesus Christ, my brothers and sisters
With both body and also with soul
To your grace and mercy
I faithfully entrust.
Protect them with your compassion
And turn into joy my great sorrow
About which I lament with longing to you.

9

HErr Jesu Christ, ich weiß kein Rath,
Des Elends loß zu werden,
So du nicht hilffst durch deine Gnad.
So lang ich leb auf Erden.
wenn es dir denn nu je gefelt,
Das ich also sol seyn gequält,
So gieb mir Kraft und Stärke.

Lord Jesus Christ, I know no plan
To escape from misery
If you do not help me through your grace.
As long as I live on earth
If it so pleases you
That I shall be tortured in this way,
Then give me strength and might.

10

HErr Jesu Christ verleih Geduld,
Hilf mir mein Kreuz ertragen,
Wend nicht von mir ab deine Huld,
Und so du mich wilt plagen,
Es zeitlich hier am Leibe thu,
Gib nur der armen Seelen Ruh,
Daß sie dort mit dir lebe.

Lord Jesus Christ, bestow patience,
Help me to bear my cross
Do not turn your mercy from me
And if you wish to torment me
Do so here on my body in this world
But give peace to my poor soul
So that it may live with you in heaven.

11

HErr Jesu Christ, das glaub ich doch
Aus meines Herzen gründe,
Du wirst mich wohl erhören noch
Zu rechter Zeit und Stunde;
Denn du hast mich noch nie verlahn,
Wenn ich dich hab geruffen an,
Des ich mich herzlich tröste.

Lord Jesus Christ, I still believe this
From the bottom of my heart,
You will hear me well
At the right time and hour
You have never rejected me
If I have called on you,
This gives me heartfelt comfort.

12

HErr Jesu Christ, einiger Trost,
Zu dir wil ich mich wenden;
Mein Herzleid ist dir wol bewust,
Du kanst und wirst es enden.
In deinem willen seis gestelt,
Machs, liebster Gott, wie dirs gefel'
Dein bin und will ich bleiben. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, only consolation,
I want to turn towards you;
The sorrow of my heart is well known to you
You can and will end it.
Let it depend on your will,
willow herb
Do dearest God what pleases you
I am and want to remain yours, Amen
