First Part

1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Flauto traverso I/II, Oboe I/II, Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Freue dich, erlöste Schar,
Rejoice, redeemed host,
Freue dich in Sions Hütten.
rejoice in the dwellings of Zion.
Dein Gedeihen hat itzund
Your prosperity has now
Einen rechten festen Grund,
a true and firm foundation
Dich mit Wohl zu überschütten.
to cover you with blessings.

2

Recitative [Bass]

Continuo

Wir haben Rast,
We have rest
Und des Gesetzes Last
and the law's burden
Ist abgetan.
is put aside.
Nichts soll uns diese Ruhe stören,
Nothing should disturb this peace,
Die unsre liebe' Väter oft
for which our dear fathers often
Gewünscht, verlanget und gehofft.
wished, longed and hoped.
Wohlan,
Come then,
Es freue sich, wer immer kann,
let whoever can rejoice
Und stimme seinem Gott zu Ehren
and honour God by beginning to sing
Ein Loblied an,
a song of praise
Und das im höhern Chor,
and do this in the heavenly choir
Ja, singt einander vor!
yes, sing this to each other!

3

Aria [Bass]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Gelobet sei Gott, gelobet sein Name,
Praised be God, praised his name,
Der treulich gehalten Versprechen und Eid!
who has faithfully kept his promise and oath!
Sein treuer Diener ist geboren,
His faithful servant has been born
Der längstens darzu auserkoren,
who long since was chosen for this purpose,
Daß er den Weg dem Herrn bereit'.
to prepare the way for the Lord.

4

Recitative [Alto]

Continuo

Der Herold kömmt und meldt den König an,
The herald comes and announces the king's arrival,
Er ruft; drum säumet nicht
He calls; therefore do not tarry,
Und macht euch auf
and get up
Mit einem schnellen Lauf,
and swiftly run,
Eilt dieser Stimme nach!
hurry after this voice!
Sie zeigt den Weg, sie zeigt das Licht,
It shows the way, it shows the light,
Wodurch wir jene selge Auen
by which on those blessed fields
Dereinst gewißlich können schauen.
we can some day surely look.

5

Aria [Alto]

Flauto traverso, Violino I con sordino, Violino II, Viola, Continuo

Kommt, ihr angefochtnen Sünder,
Come, you troubled sinners,
Eilt und lauft, ihr Adamskinder,
hurry and run, you children of Adam,
Euer Heiland ruft und schreit!
your saviour calls and cries out to you!
Kommet, ihr verirrten Schafe,
Come, you sheep who have gone astray,
Stehet auf vom Sündenschlafe,
arise from the sleep of your sins,
Denn itzt ist die Gnadenzeit!
for now is the time of grace!

6

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Flauto traverso I/II in octava e Oboe I/II e Violino I col Soprano, Violino II coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Continuo

Eine Stimme läßt sich hören
A voice is heard
In der Wüste weit und breit,
far and wide in the desert
Alle Menschen zu bekehren:
to convert all mankind:
Macht dem Herrn den Weg bereit,
prepare the way for the Lord,
Machet Gott ein ebne Bahn,
make a level path for God,
Alle Welt soll heben an,
all the world should be lifted up,
Alle Täler zu erhöhen,
all the valleys should be raised
Daß die Berge niedrig stehen.
so that the mountains may be brought low.

Second Part

7

Recitative [Bass]

Oboe I/II, Continuo

So bist du denn, mein Heil, bedacht,
Since it is your intention, my saviour,
Den Bund, den du gemacht
that the covenant that you made
Mit unsern Vätern, treu zu halten
with our fathers should be faithfully kept
Und in Genaden über uns zu walten;
and that you should rule over us in grace,
Drum will ich mich mit allem Fleiß
I want therefore with all diligence
Dahin bestreben,
from now on to strive to live
Dir, treuer Gott, auf dein Geheiß
for you, faithful God, at your command
In Heiligkeit und Gottesfurcht zu leben.
in holiness and fear of God.

8

Aria [Bass]

Oboe d'amore, Violino solo, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Ich will nun hassen
I want now to hate
Und alles lassen,
and leave everything
Was dir, mein Gott, zuwider ist.
that is contrary to you, my God.
Ich will dich nicht betrüben,
I do not want to grieve you
Hingegen herzlich lieben,
but instead to love you from my heart
Weil du mir so genädig bist.
since you are so merciful to me.

9

Recitative [Soprano]

Continuo

Und obwohl sonst der Unbestand
And although in other ways inconstancy
Den schwachen Menschen ist verwandt,
comes naturally to humanity in its weakness,
So sei hiermit doch zugesagt:
let a promise be now made:
Sooft die Morgenröte tagt,
whenever dawn brings round the day,
Solang ein Tag den andern folgen läßt,
so long as one day follows another
So lange will ich steif und fest,
for so long I want to live resolute and firm,
Mein Gott, durch deinen Geist
my God, through your Spirit,
Dir ganz und gar zu Ehren leben
completely for you and your honour.
Dich soll sowohl mein Herz als Mund
It is you that both my heart and mouth
Nach dem mit dir gemachten Bund
according to the covenant that has been made with you
Mit wohlverdientem Lob erheben.
should extol with the praise you have well deserved.

10

Aria [Soprano]

Violini all' unisono, Continuo

Eilt, ihr Stunden, kommt herbei,
Hurry, you hours, come on,
Bringt mich bald in jene Auen!
bring me soon to those fields!
Ich will mit der heilgen Schar
With the holy host I want
Meinem Gott ein' Dankaltar
to build an altar of thanks for my God
In den Hütten Kedar bauen,
in the dwellings of Kedar
Bis ich ewig dankbar sei.
so that I may always be thankful.

11

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Geduld, der angenehme Tag
Be patient, the delightful day
Kann nicht mehr weit und lange sein,
can no more be far and distant
Da du von aller Plag
when from all the troubles
Der Unvollkommenheit der Erden,
of the earth's imperfection
Die dich, mein Herz, gefangen hält,
that, my heart, holds you captive,
Vollkommen wirst befreiet werden.
you will be completely freed.
Der Wunsch trifft endlich ein,
The wish finally comes true
Da du mit den erlösten Seelen
that with the redeemed souls
In der Vollkommenheit
in perfection
Von diesem Tod des Leibes bist befreit,
you are freed from this death of the body,
Da wird dich keine Not mehr quälen.
that no misery may torment you any longer.

12

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Flauto traverso I/II, Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Freue dich, geheilgte Schar,
Rejoice, sacred host,
Freue dich in Sions Auen!
rejoice in Sion's fields!
Deiner Freude Herrlichkeit,
The glory of your joy,
Deiner Selbstzufriedenheit
your perfect contentment
Wird die Zeit kein Ende schauen.
no time will ever see end.
