1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Gedenke, Herr, wie es uns gehet,
Consider, Lord, how things are for us,
schaue und siehe unsre Schmach!
Behold and see our shame!
Unsre Freude hat ein Ende,
Our joy has an end,
unser Reihen ist in Wehklagen verkehret,
Our dancing is turned into lamentation
die Krone unsers Hauptes ist abgefallen:
The crown of our head has fallen:
o weh, dass wir so gesündiget haben!

Alas, that we have sinned so much!

2

Recitative [Soprano]

Ach, Jesu ist verloren!
Ah, Jesus is lost
Ich bin lebendig todt,
I am the living dead
denn der Verlust sagt meinen Ohren
Since the loss says to my ears
noch mehr als eine Todesnoth.
Something more than a death agony.
SoIl ich denn ohne Jesum sein,
If now I have to be without Jesus
o schreckensvolle Pein!
O fearful agony!
Ihr Töchter Zions,
You daughters of Zion
könnt ihr keine Nachricht geben,
Can you give no news
wo ist mein Heil und Leben?
Where is my life and salvation?
Ach, welche Sicherheit hat mich dahin geführt!
Ah what confidence led me to this situation!
Ich habe nicht, wie mit gebührt,
I have not,as I ought to have done,
den Heiland festgehalten,
Held firmly to my saviour
ich liess die Laster in mir walten.
I let my vices rule over me.
o wehe mir! Bei meinen Sünden,
O woe is me! With my sins
wo werd' ich Jesum, Jesum wiederfinden?

Where shall I find Jesus, Jesus again?

3

Aria [Alto]

Saget mir beliebte Felder
Tell me, you beloved fields,
und ihr angenehmen Wälder,
And you pleasant woods,
sagt, wo treff ich Jesum an?
Tell me, where will I come across Jesus?
Meines Herzens Kron'
My heart's crown
und Lust ist mir leider unbewusst,
And delight is unfortunately unknown to me,
sagt wo ich ihn finden kann?

Say where can I find him?

4

Recitative [Bass]

Sei kummervolles Herz, getrost,
Heart full of anxiety, be consoled,
dein Heil lasst bei den Jammerklagen dich nicht verzagen;
your salvation will not leave you to despair in lamentation;
sein Wort zeigt mit bewährten Gründen,
his words shows with convincing proof
wie und an welchem Ort dein Jesus sei zu finden.
How and where your Jesus is to be found
Da sagen dir die Himmelslehren:
There the heavenly teaching says to you:
du sollst durch Buss' und Glauben wiederkehren,
you should turn back through repentance and faith,
So werde Gott sich gleichfalls zu dir nah'n.
Then God will in the same way draw near to you.
Wohlan! Es wird zu meinem Trost geschehen,
Come on then!It will be my consolation
dass ich mein Heil bald werde wiedersehen !
Soon to see my salvation again.

5

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Andert euch, ihr Klagelieder,
Be changed, you songs of lamentation,
Jesus, meine Lust, kommt wieder,
Jesus, my delight, is coming again
weil mein Herz ihn sehnlich sucht.
Since my heart seeks him with longing.
Seid, ihr Sünden, seid verflucht,
Curses on you, you sins, curses on you,
ihr sollt mich nicht weiter trennen,
You shall not separate me,
mich von Jesu scheiden konnen
You cannot part me from Jesus.
