Carolyn Sampson (Soprano)

Born: May 18, 1974 - Bedford, England

The English soprano, Carolyn Sampson, read music at the University of Birmingham where she won the Arnold Goldsborough Prize for Baroque performance. She currently studies with Richard Smart.

Carolyn Sampson made her opera debut with English National Opera in Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea and returned to sing Tanterabogus in The Fairy Queen with the company in London and Barcelona and recently sang Euridice and La Musica in L'Orfeo with Le Concert d'Astrée at The Barbican. Her repertoire includes Salome in Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista and Euridyce in Gluck’s Orphé et Euridyce, Belinda in Dido and Aeneas, Susanna in Le Nozze Di Figaro and Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore.

Carolyn Sampson's concert engagements have included Messiah with The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment a USA tour with The King's Consort as featured soloist, J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra / Philippe Herreweghe, St John Passion (BWV 245) with The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra / Gustav Leonhardt, Monteverdi Vespers with The Washington Bach Consort / Harry Christophers, St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) at the BBC Proms with The English Concert / Trevor Pinnock, Esther in New York with The Gabrieli Consort / Paul McCreesh, Les Illuminations with the Manchester Camerata/Nicholas Kraemer, Igor Stravinsky and J.S. Bach with La Chapelle Royale, and Felix Mendelssohn and Schubert with Orchestre des Champs Elysées / Philippe Herreweghe. She has also performed with Chorwerkruhr/ Frieder Bernius, Scottish Chamber Orchestra / Stephen Layton, Ensemble Baroque de Limoges / Christophe Coin, RIAS Kammerchor, Israel Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia and Sonnerie.

Carolyn Sampson recently joined Robin Blaze for a joint recital at the Wigmore Hall and has appeared in The Proms Chamber Music Series and given recitals for BBC Radio 3, BBC Scotland and The Hampstead and Highgate Festival. She has recorded Johann Kuhnau, Sebastian Knüpfer, Antonio Vivaldi, Jan Dismas Zelenka, Monteverdi and Lalande for Hyperion, J.S. Bach for Harmonia Mundi, Orfeo for Virgin Classics and Dietrich Buxtehude for Linn Records.

Carolyn Sampson’s future opera engagements include her debut with Opéra de Paris singing First Niece in Peter Grimes and Pamina The Magic Flute and the title role in Semele for English National Opera. She will also perform J.S. Bach with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Johannes Brahms with the Holland Sinfonia and scenes from Gluck's Armide with Music of the Baroque, Chicago. She visits festivals and cities all over Europe on tour with The Sixteen and The King's Consort. Her recording plans include Amor in Gluck's Elena e Paride with The Gabrieli Consort / Paul McCreesh for DG Archiv, Bach Cantatas with Collegium Vocale / Philippe Herreweghe for Harmonia Mundi and with Bach Collegium Japan / Masaaki Suzuki for BIS, as well as Antonio Vivaldi and Monteverdi with The King's Consort and Rameau opera arias with Ex Cathedra for Hyperion.
