English Translation

1

Liebster Immanuel, Herzog der Frommen,
du meiner Seelen Trost, komm, komm nur bald
Du, du hast mir, mein Schatz; mein Herz genommen,

Dearest Immanuel, leader of the righteous,
you, my soul’s consolation, come, come soon,
you, my treasure, you have taken my heart from me,
so entirely it burns with love and yearns for you.
Nothing on earth can
be dearer to me,
if I, my Jesus, only keep hold of you always.

2

Dein Nam ist zuckersüß, Honig im Munde,
holdselig, lieblich, wie ein kühler Tau,
welcher das Feld erfrischt zur Morgenstunde,
also, mein Jesu! Wann ich dir vertrau.
Es weicht vom Herzen,
was nur macht Schmerzen,

Your name is sweet, honey in the mouth,
fair, lovely, like a cool dew,
which refreshes the field at the hour of dawn,
that’s how it is ,my Jesus! when I place my trust in you.
There vanishes from my heart
what only causes sorrow,
when I in faith adore you and look towards you

3

so kann das Herze doch auf Rosen gehen;
kein Ungewitter
ist mir so bitter,
ich kann bei meinem Jesu fröhlich stehn.

Even if the cross at times torments me,
as often is bound to happen to Christians,
if only Jesus shows concern for my soul,
then my heart is able to go along on roses
no storm is so bitter to me,
I can remain cheerful with my Jesus

4

If Satan's cunning and power want to devour me,
if the book of my conscience tells of my sins,
even if hell with its hosts wants to surround me,
even when death gnaws at my heart,
I still stand firm.
Jesus is the best,
who chases away everything through his blood

5

Ob mich schon alle Welt verfolgt und hasset,
ob ich gleich bin veracht' von jedermann,
von meinen Freunden auch verlassen,
nimmt mein Herr Jesus sich doch meiner an
und stärkt mich Müden,
spricht : Sei zufrieden,

Although all the world persecutes and hates me
although I am despised by everybody,
abandoned also by my friends,
if Lord Jesus shows concern for me
and strengthens me in my weariness,
says: be content,
I am your best friend and can help you

6

Fahret drum immer hin, ihr Eitelkeiten;
du sollst in meinem Mund und Herzen sein;
mein ganzes Leben bleibt dir ergeben,

Therefore, go away for ever, you vanities.
you , Jesus , are mine and I am yours.
I want to leave the world behind and get myself ready for you;
you should be in my mind and heart,
my whole life remains dedicated to you
until I am laid in the grave.
