Cantata BWV 202
Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten
English Translation in Interlinear Format
Cantata BWV 202 - Give way now, dismal shadows

Event: Secular Cantata to celebrate a wedding
Text: Anon

1

Aria [Soprano]

Oboe, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten,
Give way now, dismal shadows,
Frost und Winde, geht zur Ruh!
Frost and wind, go to rest!
Florens Lust
Flora's delight
Will der Brust
will grant our hearts
Nichts als frohes Glück verstatten,
nothing but joyful fortune,
Denn sie träget Blumen zu.
for she comes bearing flowers.

2

Recitative [Soprano]

Continuo

Die Welt wird wieder neu,
The world becomes new again,
Auf Bergen und in Gründen
on hills and in valleys
Will sich die Anmut doppelt schön verbinden,
beauty will unite and be doubly fair,
Der Tag ist von der Kälte frei.
the day is free from cold.

3

Aria [Soprano]

Continuo

Phoebus eilt mit schnellen Pferden
Phoebus hurries with swift horses
Durch die neugeborne Welt.
through the newborn world,
Ja, weil sie ihm wohlgefällt,
Yes, since this delights him so much,
Will er selbst ein Buhler werden.
he himself wants to become a lover.

4

Recitative [Soprano]

Continuo

Drum sucht auch Amor sein Vergnügen,
Therefore Love also seeks his delight,
Wenn Purpur in den Wiesen lacht,
when purple laughs in the meadows,
Wenn Florens Pracht sich herrlich macht,
when Flora's splendour becomes glorious,
Und wenn in seinem Reich,
and when in his kingdom,
Den schönen Blumen gleich,
like the beautiful flowers
Auch Herzen feurig siegen.
hearts also are victorious in their ardour.

5

Aria [Soprano]

Violino solo, Continuo

Wenn die Frühlingslüfte streichen
When the spring breezes blow
Und durch bunte Felder wehn,
and waft through the colourful fields,
Pflegt auch Amor auszuschleichen,
it is Love's custom also to sneak out
Um nach seinem Schmuck zu sehn,
to see what is his own glory
Welcher, glaubt man, dieser ist,
-and that, people believe, is this:
Dass ein Herz das andre küsst.
when one heart kisses another.

6

Recitative [Soprano]

Continuo

Und dieses ist das Glücke,
And this is good fortune,
Dass durch ein hohes Gunstgeschicke
when through a lofty gift of fate
Zwei Seelen einen Schmuck erlanget,
two souls obtain one jewel,
An dem viel Heil und Segen pranget.
which is resplendent with health and blessing.

7

Aria [Soprano]

Oboe, Continuo

Sich üben im Lieben,
To become adept in love,
In Scherzen sich herzen
to jest and caress
Ist besser als Florens vergängliche Lust.
is better than Flora's passing pleasure.
Hier quellen die Wellen,
Here the waves flow,
Hier lachen und wachen
here laugh and watch
Die siegenden Palmen auf Lippen und Brust.
the palms of victory on lips and breast.

8

Recitative [Soprano]

Continuo

So sei das Band der keuschen Liebe,
May the union of chaste love,
Verlobte Zwei,
beloved couple,
Vom Unbestand des Wechsels frei!
be free from the fickleness of change!
Kein jäher Fall
May no sudden accident,
Noch Donnerknall
no thunderclap
Erschrecke die verliebten Triebe!
frighten your amorous desires.

9

Aria (Gavotte) [Soprano]

Oboe, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Sehet in Zufriedenheit
See in contentment
Tausend helle Wohlfahrtstage,
a thousand bright and prosperous days,
Dass bald bei der Folgezeit
so that soon as time passes
Eure Liebe Blumen trage!
your love may bear its flower!
