Text for Cantata BWV 1165=Anh. 159 (Motet)
Ich lasse dich nicht

Original German Text

English Translation

1 & 2. Chöre I, II

Ich lasse dich nicht,

du segnest mich denn,

mein Jesu, ich lasse dich nicht.

I will not let go of you,

that you might bless me,

my Jesus, I will not let go of you.

SOPRAN

Weil du mein Gott und Vater bist,

dein Kind wirst du verlassen nicht,

du väterliches Herz.

Ich bin ein armer Erdenkloß,

auf Erden weiß ich keinen Trost.

As you are my God and Father,

you will not forsake your child,

you fatherly heart.

I am a poor clod of dirt,

on earth I know no solace.

3.SCHLUßCHOR (Anhang)

Dir, Jesu, Gottes Sohn, sei Preis,

daß ich aus deinem Worte weiß,

was ewig selig macht!

Gib, daß ich nun auch fest und treu

in diesem meinem Glauben sei.

Ich bringe Lob und Ehre dir,

daß du ein ewig Heil auch mir

durch deinen Tod erwarbst.

Herr, dieses Heil gewähre mir,

und ewig, ewig dank ich dir.

To you Jesus, Son of God, be praise,

for from your word I know

what makes me forever blest!

Grant that I now also remain
steadfast and true in this my belief.

I bring laud and honor unto you,

for you have procured, even for me,
eternal salvation through your death.

Lord assure me this salvation,

and forever and ever will I thank you.
