Indonesian Translations of Bach Cantatas & Other Vocal Works in Word-for-Word Format

English | Indonesian

A Note on Indonesian Translations

The translation adopts ‘word-for-word’ method of translation, in which one Indonesian word or phrase is placed right under its German synonim. Whenever the meaning of the resulting Indonesian sentence is not clear, confusing or ackward, one more line of freer translation is immediately added underneath. The translation, simple as it may be, is intended for fellow Indonesians who do not want to trouble themselves with other translation, and at the same time like to follow the texts word for word.

Three font styles are used in the translation. Phrases, strophes, or verses which come from the Bible, or secondary sources closely linked to the Bible, are always in italics. Each time a certain movement contains any of these, the source where the text originates from is specified and attached below the movement’s heading. The chorales are always in boldface. Chorale is a simple hymn sung by a congregation. In Indonesia, this type can certainly be found in the hymn book used by Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (Buku Ende HKBP). This hymn book also contains some of the much beloved chorales utilised by Bach in his works, albeit in the language of the Batak. In accordance with the numbering used in this hymn book, the following are but three examples. No. 78 "O ulu na sap mudar" (Chorale "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" in St. Matthew Passion BWV 244), No. 342 "Ngot ma ho dijou soara" (Chorale "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" in Cantata BWV 140), and No. 117 "Jahowa Debatanta do partanobatoanta" (Chorale "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" in Cantata BWV 80). For free poetry, regular font style is used.

The Indonesian translation is indebted to Melvin Unger’s "Handbook to Bach’s Sacred Cantata Texts". It is also benefit from Francis Browne’s "English Translations of Cantatas in Interlinear Format" at http://www.bach-cantatas.com/, and from various English translation accompanying recordings of Bach's vocal works. All the canonical texts in the translation are cited from Alkitab Terjemahan Baru © LAI 1974, with the kind permission of Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia. Texts from secondary sources closely linked to the Bible, such as Apocrypha and Josephus' books, are translated directly from Unger's book. The names of event or occasion for which any of the work was composed, are translated according to the liturgital designation found in Almanak HKBP. The names of event or occasion which are not included in that book, which is a few, are translated freely. Question mark "?" is used to designate unidentifiable event or occasion. Any mistake or misconception in the translation originates solely from the Indonesian translator.

Anybody can use the translation freely, provided that the source of translation (http://www.bach-cantatas.com/) is made clear in its usage.

Catatan Terjemahan Indonesia

No. 78 "O ulu na sap mudar" (Chorale "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" dalam St. Matthew Passion BWV 244), No. 342 "Ngot ma ho dijou soara" (Chorale "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" dalam Cantata BWV 140), dan No. 117 "Jahowa Debatanta do partanobatoanta" (Chorale "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" dalam Cantata BWV 80).
