Event: Dramma Per Musica, for the Birthday of Maria Josepha Queen of Poland and Electress
Text: Anon (probably J.S. Bach)
Characters: Bellona (Soprano), Pallas (Alto), Irene (Tenor), Fama (Bass)

1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Flauto traverso I/II, Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Tönet, ihr Pauken! Erschallet, Trompeten!
Sound, you drums! Ring out, you trumpets !
Klingende Saiten, erfüllet die Luft!
Resonant strings, fill the air!
Singet itzt Lieder, ihr muntren Poeten,
Sing your songs now, you lively poets,
Königin lebe! wird fröhlich geruft.
Long live the queen! this is our joyful shout.
Königin lebe! dies wünschet der Sachse,
Long live the queen! This is the wish of Saxony,
Königin lebe und blühe und wachse!
Lomg live the queen and may she flourish and prosper!

2

Recitative: Irene (Peace ) [Tenor]

Continuo

Heut ist der Tag,
Today is the day
Wo jeder sich erfreuen mag.
when everyone may rejoice.
Dies ist der frohe Glanz
This is the joyful splendour
Der Königin Geburtsfests-Stunden,
of the time of the queen’s birthday,
Die Polen, Sachsen und uns ganz
which means for Poles, Saxons and all of us
In größter Lust und Glück erfunden.
the greatest happiness and delight.
Mein Ölbaum
My olive tree
Kriegt so Saft als fetten Raum.
has both sap and luxuriant growth,
Er zeigt noch keine falbe Blätter;
it shows yet no yellow leaves,
Mich schreckt kein Sturm, Blitz, trübe Wolken, düstres Wetter.
I am scared by no storm, lightning, dismal clouds, gloomy weather.

3

Aria: Bellona [Soprano]

Flauto traverso I/II, Continuo

Blast die wohlgegriffnen Flöten,
Blow the firmly held flutes,
Dass Feind, Lilien, Mond erröten,
so that the enemy, lilies and the moon may blush,
Schallt mit jauchzendem Gesang!
ring out with jubilant song!
Tönt mit eurem Waffenklang!
Let the clash of your weapons sound!
Dieses Fest erfordert Freuden,
This festival demands joy
Die so Geist als Sinnen weiden.
that feeds both spirit and mind.

4

Recitative: Bellona [Soprano]

Continuo

Mein knallendes Metall
My crash of metal
Der in der Luft erbebenden Kartaunen,
as the heavy canon make the air shudder,
Der frohe Schall;
the joyful noise;
Das angenehme Schauen;
the pleasant sight;
Die Lust, die Sachsen itzt empfindt,
the delight that Saxons now feel,
Rührt vieler Menschen Sinnen.
move the minds of many people.
Mein schimmerndes Gewehr
My glimmering weapons
Nebst meiner Söhne gleichen Schritten
with my sons’ measured march
Und ihre heldenmäßge Sitten
and their heroic ways
Vermehren immer mehr und mehr
increase ever more and more
Des heutgen Tages süße Freude.
the sweet joy of today.

5

Aria: Pallas [Alto]

Oboe I/II, Continuo

Fromme Musen! meine Glieder!
Devoted Muses! My companions!
Singt nicht längst bekannte Lieder!
Do not sing songs that have been long known!
Dieser Tag sei eure Lust!
Let this day be your delight!
Füllt mit Freuden eure Brust!
Fill your hearts with joy!
Werft so Kiel als Schriften nieder
Throw down both quill and writings
Und erfreut euch dreimal wieder!
and rejoice with triple joy!

6

Recitative: Pallas [Alto]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Unsre Königin im Lande,
Our country’s queen,
Die der Himmel zu uns sandte,
whom heaven sent to us,
Ist der Musen Trost und Schutz.
is the Muses’ comfort and protection.
Meine Pierinnen wissen,
This is known by my Pierides
Die in Ehrfurcht ihren Saum noch küssen,
who in reverence kiss her hem,
Vor ihr stetes Wohlergehn
for her constant prosperity
Dank und Pflicht und Ton stets zu erhöhn.
constantly to increase their gratitude and duty and song.
Ja, sie wünschen, dass ihr Leben
Indeed they wish that her life
Möge lange Lust uns geben.
may long give us delight.

7

Aria: Fama [Bass]

Tromba, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Kron und Preis gekrönter Damen,
Crown and praise of crowned ladies,
Königin! mit deinem Namen
Queen! with your name
Füll ich diesen Kreis der Welt.
I shall fill the whole world.
Was der Tugend stets gefällt
What is always pleasing to virtue
Und was nur Heldinnen haben,
and what only heroine have
Sein dir angeborne Gaben.
are your gifts from birth.

8

Recitative: Fama [Bass]

Flauto traverso I/II, Oboe I/II, Continuo

So dringe in das weite Erdenrund
Then throughout the wide circle of the earth
Mein von der Königin erfüllter Mund!
may my voice, which is filled with the queen, penetrate.
Ihr Ruhm soll bis zum Axen
Her fame should grow right up to the axle
Des schön gestirnten Himmels wachsen,
of heaven with its beautiful stars,
Die Königin der Sachsen und der Polen
may the queen of the Saxons and Poles
Sei stets des Himmels Schutz empfohlen.
be entrusted to heaven’s constant protection.
So stärkt durch sie der Pol
Then through her heaven’s pole strengthens
So vieler Untertanen längst erwünschtes Wohl.
the prosperity desired for a long time by so many of her subjects.
So soll die Königin noch lange bei uns hier verweilen
Thus may the queen for a long time tarry here among us
Und spät, ach! spät zum Sternen eilen.
and late, ah! late hasten to the stars.

9

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Tromba I-III, Timpani, Flauto traverso I/II, Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Irene [Tenor]:
Blühet, ihr Linden in Sachsen, wie Zedern!
Blossom, you linden trees in Saxony, like cedars!

Bellona [Soprano]:
Schallet mit Waffen und Wagen und Rädern!
Resound with weapons, wagons and wheels!

Pallas [Alto]:
Singet, ihr Musen, mit völligem Klang!
Sing, you Muses, with full sound!

All:
Fröhliche Stunden, ihr freudigen Zeiten!
Happy hours, you joyful times!
Gönnt uns noch öfters die güldenen Freuden:
Grant us more often in the future these golden joys:
Königin, lebe, ja lebe noch lang!
Queen, may you live, yes may you live long!
