SWR Vockalensemble Stuttgart (Chamber Choir)

Founded: 1946 - Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart (- SWRVE) is one of the international top ensembles of contemporary music. During its history it has sung world premieres more than any other choir. In addition to the new music the SWR Vokalensemble is dedicated to demanding choral works of earlier eras. The SWR Vokalensemble was founded in 1946 as Kammerchor von Radio Stuttgart. It was renamed in 1971 as Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart and in 1998 as SWR Vokalensemble. The chief conductors Marinus Voorberg, Klaus Martin Ziegler and Rupert Huber have decisively shaped the SWR Vokalensemble or the Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart in the past. Since 2003, Marcus Creed is the Artistic Director. His interpretations combine style safety, beauty of sound, technical sovereignty and musical liveliness and encounter with the public and press with great approval. The majority of the SWR Vokalensemble's concerts take place in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. But the choir has also been heard on the international concert stages and is a welcome guest at the prestigious music festivals at home and abroad. Numerous CD recordings of the SWR Vokalensemble have been awarded prestigious prizes - recently the Prize of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Echo-Klassikpreis and the Grand Prix du Disc The fact that young people in the the world of vocal music and the desire to sing and to discover their own voice, is an important concern for the SWR Volalensemble.
