Andrea Conangla (Soprano)

Born: Viana do Castelo, Portugal

The Portuguese soprano, Andrea Conangla Fernandes, has a Master's degree in Music Education from Universidade de Aveiro, Portuga (2011-2014), where she specialized in teaching voice through movement and improvisation, in addition to teaching classical singing. Based in Germany since 2017, she completed her Master's degree in Contemporary Music with distinction at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Stuttgart with Angelika Luz (2017-2021), did a postgraduate degree in classical singing with Ulrike Sonntag, was part of the Schubertklasse taught by Thomas Seyboldt and also received composition impulses from Martin Schüttler. She has also participated in master-classes with Sarah Maria Sun, Donatienne Michel-Dansac, Thomas Seybolt, Margreet Honig, Susan Waters, Anna-Maria Hefele (overtone singing), et al. She was the winner of the 2013 Santa Cecília International Music Competition (Porto, Portugal).

With a profound sensibility for socio-political realities and wielding a distinctive artistic vision, Andrea Conangla is making her mark in the classical and contemporary fields, as both a singer and composer-improviser. Her creative work focuses on socio-political subjects such as social media, feminism and body politics: a multifaceted artist that thrives on the intersection between artistic intervention, activism, and both composed and improvised music.

Frequently requested as a soloist in opera, oratorio and contemporary musical theater, Andrea Conangla has sung with reference orchestras and ensembles in Europe such as the Münchner Philharmoniker, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, ilGustoBarocco, Sond'Arte Electric Ensemble and Aleph Guitarrenquartett. She sang J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244, Mass in B minor BWV 232 and Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248; George Frideric Handel's Messiah; W.A. Mozart's Regina Coeli, Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem and Frederick Delius' Requiem, as well as the roles of Ninfa in L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi, Tarquino in the opera Muzio Scevola by Filippo Amadei, George Frideric Handel and Giovanni Bononcini, Soprano Coloratura in A Laugh to Cry by Miguel Azguime, Eulalia in O' KARAKINO by Uday Krishnakumar and Talus in the world prémier of Solar - Icarus Burning by Howard Moody. Andrea has also had the opportunity to learn and collaborate directly with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Jennifer Walshe and Bernhard Lang.

In the ensemble context Andrea Conangla has held engagements with SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart (2020-2021; Director: Marcus Creed), Kammerchor Stuttgart (Director: Frieder Bernius) and Ensemble Cythera. Andrea is the founder of Kollektiv TRIGGER, a flexible ensemble of female voices dedicated to contemporary music.

In 2020 Andrea Conangla was awarded the support of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and in 2021 the InSzene:Vokal-Förderung (Podium Gegenwart, Deutscher Musikrat) for promising young artists in the field of contemporary music. She was a vocal improvisation lecturer at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen from 2020 to 2023. As a guest lecturer, she has conducted workshops and seminars at Balleteatro, Porto, and at the Łódź University of Music, Poland. She is currently being funded by InSzene, a program of the German music council. She currently lives in Stuttgart, Germany.
