Russian Translations of Bach Cantatas & Other Vocal Works (Russian-3)
Note on the Translations

С.Баха.

English

All the translations of J.S.Bach’s vocal works have been made from original languages (German/Latin/Italian) by a secular person.

A prefrence was given to a minimal literary adaptation of the text. Translations are intended not for self-dependent reading, but for synchronous listening with the sounding music. Therefore, an attempt was made to keep the highest possible assimilation of the Russian text to the original one, even structurally. To achieve the greatest possible likeness to a sounding work, some special conventions have been used, which should be explained separately:

* All translations are rhythmically divided in compliance with the sounding music, i.e. any interruptions, pauses, caesuras and so on are marked by breaking of text and the beginning of a new line. Particularly big musical pauses, tearing sounding aloud the text marked by blank lines.

* Every movement is preceded by the first line of the original text, shifted a little bit to the right.

* All ensemble scenes, i.e. when several texts sound at the same time superimposed upon each other, are marked by external borders in the form of tables.

* Frequent repetitions of appropriate words or strings of texts are presented relatively by detached character dots.

* In arias written in da capo form, or in movements of a three-piece form with trio, the contrasting middles are slightly shifted to the right in comparison with the main text. In these forms the musical dividing is made only for the first appearance of the text in the relevant part of the form. In that case all subsequent repetitions are not reproduced.

* In the works, written in Latin language, the original text is reproduced. In these cases the text of the translation is placed just below the line of the reproduced original, being slightly shifted to the right. Subsequent repetitions, presented in the music, are not reproduced.

* The musical key of every movement is shown, usually a measure and an author's indication of tempo are shown too. The measure «4/4» is denoted as «C», as it usually is present in the notes..

* Words given in square brackets are absent in the original and are added in the Russian translation for better reading of the meaning.

* Seldom it is used the deep grey pouring, that means the accentuation of cuts done frequently.

In general, such a system of "musical" break-down of the translated text is quite handy, although, of course, any performance will inevitably make some changes, which is not particularly significant in the long run. Predominantly this «musical» break-down of the text of Bach’s cantatas was made from the CD set recorded by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt; so this version will be especially convenient to keep track of the translations.

My sincere hope is that these translations will help Russian listeners to become more familiar with the vocal works of J.S. Bach.
