Anna Szostak (Choral Conductor)

Born: Poland

Anna Szostak is one of the leading choral conductors in Poland. She has founded and worked with several vocal groups, including Camerata Silesia Soloists’ Ensemble, which she established in 1990. As artistic director of Camerata Silesia, she has developed its artistic profile, which focuses on the carefully-selected repertoire of both early and contemporary music.

Anna Szostak is also an indefatigable promoter of early music on period instruments. She has initiated and organised many concerts of Renaissance and Baroque vocal-instrumental music. Both in concert and on disc, she has conducted several early music ensembles made up of leading Polish and foreign musicians, such as Il Tempo and Concerto Polacco, as well as many orchestras (together with Antoni Wit she conducted the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Lutosławski’s Trois PoŹmes d’Henri Michaux). She has performed with Emma Kirkby and Barbara Schlick and has appeared at numerous prestigious venues and festivals in Poland and abroad.

Anna Szostak's discography includes 13 CD's. Many composers have dedicated their works to her Camerata Silesia and its soloists.

Anna Szostak has received many awards at choral competitions and festivals, including the International Choral Festival in Międzyzdroje (1982), the ‘Legnica Cantat’ National Choral Tournament (1983 and 1986) and the ‘Holsatia Cantat’ International Choral Competition in Neumünster (1990). Her honours also include the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art for outstanding musical achievements.
