Max Ciolek (Tenor)

Born: November 4, 1959 - Dortmund, North-Rhine, Westphalia, Germany

The German tenor (also conductor and photographer), Max Ciolek, received his singing training initially with Alastair Thompson as a member of the King's Singers, then with John Potter at the Akademie für Alte Musik in Bremen and with Mechthild Georg in Cologne. He had Master courses with Emma Kirkby and Christoph Prégardien.

Max Ciolek has made a name for himself, amongst other activities, as a Bach singer in international demand. He has given concerts in nearly all European countries, in such venues as the Cologne Philharmonie and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He has also appeared in China, Morocco and the USA. He has worked with such conductors as Philippe Herreweghe, Hermann Max, Peter Neumann, Reinhard Goebel and Jörg Straube. His American debut concerts were conducted by Ton Koopman. In the Bach year 2000 he participated in tours to Australia and South America performing Bach’s Mass in B minor (BWV 232) under the baton of Sigiswald Kuijken. He is also an increasingly frequent guest at international festivals, including the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Académies Musicales de Saintes, and the Flanders Festival and the Rheingau-Musikfestival.

Max Ciolek's numerous broadcasts CD recordings testify to his wide-ranging repertoire, and his flexibility for vocal music of all centuries, which, in addition to the Bach Evangelists, includes works by Schütz, through Mozart and Mendelssohn, right up to Benjamin Britten.
