'Gilded Goldbergs' as Editor's Choice(!)

Piotr Jaworski wrote (January 15, 2003):
Apologies, but when I've seen that I could not resist....

I wrote it already that Robin Holloway 'Gilded Goldbergs' - that reached me rigth before Xmas - placed themselves on the very top my my list of 2002 favourites. This set collected various reviews - but to my surprise it had been selected as the Editor's Choice in the February issue of the 'Gramophone'.
(Full note quoted below.)

I very much recommend this recording especially to those who still hesitate....

Imitations, arrangements, orchestrations and parodies have always played a major part in the classical tradition. Only last month we reviewed Uri Caine's reworking of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations and this month sees one of the UK's most distinguished composers revisiting Bach's masterpiece in variation form, the Goldberg Variations. Holloway explains at length in a fascinating booklet essay how his Gilded Goldbergs came about - the initial motivation was to clarify certain of the textures by arranging them for two pianists. But the compositional muse quickly homed in on the project and soon Holloway was doing considerably more than arranging. As he puts it, 'even in a place where arrangement was the only goal, "interference" crackled the transmission'. The results are intriguing, witty and wholly engaging.

Kurt Reiss wrote (January 15, 2003):
[To Piotr Jaworski] Have you ever heard the 2 Piano transcription by Rheinberger-Reger?

Piotr Jaworski wrote (January 15, 2003):
[To Kurt Reiss] NOT YET.
