Jonathan Peter Kenny (Counter-tenor)

Born: Liverpool, England

The English counter-tenor, Jonathan Peter Kenny, was born in Liverpool, read music at Exeter University and trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with James Bowman. He now studies with Brian Gordon.

Jonathan Peter Kenny is best known for his George Frideric Handel interpretations. He has sung: Valentiniano Ezio (Karlsruhe Händel Festival); Nireno Giulio Cesare (The Royal Opera, Covent Garden), Andronico Tamerlano (Opera Theatre Company, Dublin, Covent Garden Festival, Melbourne International Festival, Expo 98 in Lisbon, and the Glimmerglass Festival (New York); Guido Flavio (Opera Theatre Company, Covent Garden Festival and Antwerp). Narciso Agrippina (for John Eliot Gardiner and on CD). title role in Amadigi for OTC (Buxton and Covent Garden Festivals, Opera Comique, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Melbourne International Festival and Lisbon) Medoro Orlando (Beaune and City of London Festivals); David Saul (Covent Garden Festival and La Chaise-Dieu). He has also sung Demetrio Berenice, Cyrus Belshazzar, and the title role Joseph and his Brethren. Other roles include: Shepherd (Monteverdi's Orfeo) at the Salzburg Festival (John Eliot Gardiner) and English National Opera; the title role in Gluck's Orfeo (Scottish Opera), Endimione La Calisto (Opera Factory, Zürich); L'humana fragilita/Anfinomo II ritorno d'Ulisse (Musica nel chiostro); Death Paradise Lost (Penderecki) in Krakow; Mozart Letters, Riddles and Writs (Michael Nyman) London Opera Festival. For Jonathan Dove, he created the title role in L’augellino belverde and the Poet In Search of Angels.

Recent engagements include Hamor Jephtha for the Nederlandse Bach Vereiniging, Arsamenes Serse with the Gabrieli Consort, James in the premiere of Hey, Persephone! at the Almeida, David Saul in Oslo, Bertarido Rodelinda with Opera Theatre Company throughout UK and Ireland, the premiere of The Music Programme by Roxanna Panufnik in Warsaw and at the Covent Garden Festival and Tobias and the Angel at the Almeida Festival. This season's plans include further performances of Rodelinda in New York, Ignoramus and the Madman in Warsaw, Migrating Birds in Bologna, Orfeo in Japan and concerts throughout Europe. He was described by Rodney Milnes in The Times as ‘one of the most intensely musical of today’s counter-tenors’ and by Michael John White in The Independent on Sunday as having ‘one of the most purely beautiful counter-tenor voices around’.

Jonathan Peter Kenny's recordings include Jonathan Miller's acclaimed BBC tv film and CD of J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) performed in France and Spain, Israel in Egypt, Narciso Agrippina and Spirit Dido and Aeneas with John Eliot Gardiner (Philips); Dietrich Buxtehude Cantatas with Jos van Immerseel (Channel Classics); La convervione di Clodoveo (Antonio Caldara) with Le Parlement de Musique (Accord); Deluge by Jocelyn Pook (Virgin). Other appearances include Sorceress/Spirit Dido and Aeneas for Paul Goodwin and The English Concert in Stuttgart and the National Arts Orchestra, Ottawa; Didymus Theodora (Berlin and Halle). Dixit Dominus at the 1995 BBC Proms; Olinto, Tebro e Gloria with London Baroque in Beaune and for BBC Radio 3; Lucifer The Fall of Lucifer (Burgon) in Cordes.
