Matthias Goerne (Görne) (Bass-Baritone)

Born: March 31, 1967 - Karl Marz Stadt (now Chemnitz), Germany

The German bass-baritone, Matthias Goerne, had vocal studies with Professor Hans J. Beyer in Leipzig, and later with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

Following his studies, Matthias Goerne has lately worked with conductors such as Ashkenazy, Kurt Masur, Blomstedt, Stein and Honeck. He has received invitations for 1996-1997 to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. Closely associated in recent years with the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart and Helmuth Rilling, he has also been involved in several recording projects.

Matthias Goerne has made successful opera appearances in Cologne, Zürich, the Dresden Semperoper and the Komische Oper Berlin. London's Wigmore Hall was the location for his sensational lieder debut and he has appeared there regularly. His American lieder debut was in New York in April 1996.

Matthias Goerne recorded Schubert's Winterreise on CD in August 1996.
