Chorale [S, A, T, B]

There is a listing of “O großer Gott von Macht” as ‘Deest’ by Grove Music Online. I have chosen to disregard this as it remains questionable until it has been accepted by having a BWV number assigned to it. In any case, we don’t even know what form this is in: a 4 pt. setting, a chorale prelude or partita, etc.?]

German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1

O großer Gott von Macht,
und reich von Gütigkeit,
willst du das ganze Land
strafen mit Grimmigkeit ?
Vielleicht möchten noch Fromme seyn,
die thäten nach dem Willen dein ;
der wollest du verschonen,
und nicht nach Werken lohnen.

O God, great in your power
and rich in your goodness,
do you want to punish the whole land
in your wrath?
Perhaps there are some righteous
who act according to your will;
may you spare them
and not reward us according to our deeds.

2

O großer Gott von Ehr,
dies ferne sey von dir,
daß Bös und Fromm zugleich
die strenge Straf berühr.
Es möchten etwa fünfzig seyn,
die thäten nach dem Willen dein ;
der wollest du &c.

Oh great God of honour ,
may it be far from you,
that the evil and the righteous alike
should be affected by your harsh punishment.
There may be fifty people,
who act according to your will;
may you spare them etc.

3

O großer Gott von Rath,
laß die Barmherzigkeit
ergehen, und halt ein
mit der Gerechtigkeit.
Es möchten fünf und vierzig seyn,
die thäten nach dem Willen dein ;
der wollest du &c.

O God great in wisdom,
let your mercy be shown
and restrain your Justice.
There may be forty five people,
who act according to your will;
may you spare them etc.

4

O großer Gott von Stärk,
schau an das arme Land,
und wende von der Straf
dein ausgestreckte Hand.
Es möchten etwa vierzig seyn,
die thäten nach dem Willen dein ;
der wollest du &c.

Oh God great in your power
behold our poor land
and turn away from punishment
your outstretched hand.
There may be forty people
who act according to your will;
may you spare them etc

5

O großer Gott von Kraft,
laß doch erweichen dich,
weil das elend Gebet
so oft erholet sich.
Vielleicht möchten es dreyßig seyn,
die thäten nach dem Willen dein ;
der &c.

Oh God great in your might,
be softened
while our pitiful prayers
are raised so often.
There may be thirty people
who act according to your will;
may you spare them etc

6

O großer Gott von Gnad,
erhör auch unsre Stimm,
und auf dem hohen Thron
das Seufzen tief vernimm.
Es möchten etwa zwanzig seyn,
die thäten nach dem Willen dein;
der wollest &c.

O God great in your mercy
hear also our voice
and from your high throne
accept our deep sighs.
There may be twenty people
who act according to your will;
may you spare them etc

7

O großer Gott von That,
schau wie die arme Erd
von deiner Mildigkeit
noch einen Wunsch begehrt.
Es möchten etwa zehen seyn,
die thäten nach dem Willen dein;
der wollest &c.

O God great in your deeds,
see how the poor earth
with one wish
longs for leniency from you.
There may be ten people
who act according to your will;
may you spare them

8

O großer Gott von Lob,
wenn ja das Maas erfüllt
der Sünden, und aus Zorn
uns gar verderben willt ;
so möchten doch die Kinderlein
thun nach dem rechten Willen dein ;
drum wollest du &c.

O God great in glory,
if the number of our sins
is complete, and in your anger
you wish to destroy us,
there may yet be little children
who act according to your will;
therefore may you wish etc

9

O großer Gott von Treu,
Weil vor dir niemand gilt
Als dein Sohn Jesus Christ,
Der deinen Zorn gestillt,
So sieh doch an die Wunden sein,
Sein Marter, Angst und schwere Pein;
Um seinetwillen schone,
Uns nicht nach Sünden lohne!

Oh God great in your faithfulness,
since nobody is worthy before you
as your son Jesus Christ
who appeases your anger:
look then on his wounds,
his suffering, anguish and great pain;
then for his sake
do not reward us according to our sins.
