This sample from the complete score serves to demonstrate even visually, if not aurally apparent in the listening experience, the conflict between the celestial forces and those of Satan. Here are specific aspects worth pointing out:

1. the broken-chord, ascending and descending ‘figura corta’ figures (anapaest in nature) some of which occur simultaneously in opposition (going in opposite directions) to each other

2. the breaking apart of the main fugal subject into fragments which are tossed back and forth between the two choruses

3. the continuation from the 1^st section of many large interval leaps in the vocal parts
