How to play Music Examples

Usually, the music examples offer two options:
- right click on the link to download and save to your own computer for later reference, or
- left click on the link to listen as it comes in.
In some cases only one option is available.

Either way, please note that this can take time, depending on the type and speed of your connection facility. Cable connection is fast, phone-line connection is slow. Long ones (generally max 1.5MB) can take 1 or 2 minutes.

Many of the music examples are not located at the Bach Cantata Website, but in other sites (see: Music Examples – Sources). The loading speed depends also on the availabily and performance of the servers on which those site are located. Loading duration can also vary according to how busy either our site or your site may be.

If you are saving onto your computer, you may wish to make a directory for "saved music" before you start. If you are not sure how to replay it once you've saved it, simply go to your directory (Explore on PCs) and double click the music piece.

If you are left-clicking to play it "live", some sort of program will come up automatically. Depending on which one you have, it may show the download process as a time bar, or it may wait until it has received it all before playing. Or it may load a "buffer" amount then start playing, loading the rest as it plays.

Trouble-shooting

Problems sometimes occur. If you are having trouble listening to Music Examples, asound samples, it may be for the following reasons:

The network is too busy. There are many points from our server to your computer that can become congested with traffic, and this will prevent sound samples from playing properly on your computer. Your best bet is to try again at a later time.

You do not have the correct player installed on your computer. Be sure you have the latest version of the Windows Media or Real Audio player installed on your computer. See above for links to obtain these latest versions.

Your player is not properly installed. For problems with Real Audio, please visit RealAudio's Help and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). For problems with Windows Media, please consult the WindowsMedia.com Help page.
