History & Mission:

Bach-Chor Tokyo was founded by Emiko Ohmura in 1962 as an chorus performing and studying only J.S. Bach’s works centering around sacred cantatas. It has held almost 200 concerts since its inception including more than 100 regular concerts in Tokyo and many special concerts at churches or local music halls. Emiko Ohmura has chiefly been conducting them.

Language problems are always a big barrier to the introduction of foreign vocal music, especially in Asian countries. Bach-Chor Tokyo has made it a principle since its inception to sing in Japanese following Emiko Ohmura’s translation. Ohmura and members have a strong wish to sing in Japanese even at the cost of perfect unity between the original words and melodies. This is because we wish to meet the spirit of the text and the Composer, J.S. Bach by means of our mother tongue Japanese, our spirit itself. We also believe that it is a realization of the historic intention of the Reformer, Martin Luther, who chose to read and sing in common people’s words (mother tongue).

From 2000, aiming to diffuse the Bach music in Japan, we are publishing a serial music books of Bach’s cantatas with Japanese text translated by Ohmura in cooperation with Breitkopf & Härtel.
