Bach-Chor Tokyo (Choir)

Founded: 1962 - Tokyo, Japan

Bach-Chor Tokyo was founded by Emiko Ohmura in 1962 as an amateur chorus performing and studying only J.S. Bach’s works such as cantatas, motets, masses and oratorios. It has held almost 200 concerts since its inception including regular concerts in Tokyo and special concerts at churches and local music halls. Michio Kobayashi was the conductor for the first 13 years and Emiko Ohmura has chiefly been conducting since 1975.

Bach-Chor Tokyo basically performes in Japanese translation. Their various challenges, such as the performances in Japanese and planning open seminars on J.S. Bach studies, attract a lot of public attention. Bach-Chor Tokyo has visited Germany four times since 1983, performing at several venues including St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. This is their fifth visit to Germany.
