Sebastian Weigle (Conductor)

Born: 1961 - Berlin, Germany

The German conductor, Sebastian Weigle, received his education at the “Hochschule fuer Musik Hanns Eisler”.

From 1997 to 2002 Sebastian Weigle was the Chief Conductor of the young Philharmonic Orchestra Brandenburg (since 1993) held the position of First Staatskapellmeister at the Berlin State Opera, conducting a wide repertoire. Since September 2004 he is the Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, where he conducted a lot of new production as well as many concerts with great success. And the opera critics of Barcelona elected him conductor of the season 2004-2005 as well as 2005-2006.

In January 2006 Sebastian Weigle made his successful debut with Beethoven´s Fidelio at the Wiener Staatsoper where he will conduct performances of Boris Godunow in December 2007/January 2008. After his debut at the Bayreuther Festspielen with a new production of Meistersinger von Nürnberg in summer 2007 and the successful production of Tiefland at the Wiener Volksoper in October 2007 future plans include besides his performances in Barcelona projects in Bonn, Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg, Leipzig, Lyon, Madrid and Vienna.

In 2008-2009 Sebastian Weigle will become the music director of the Opera Frankfurt where he made his debut with Salome in 2002-2003 followed by the successful new productions of Frau ohne Schatten and Pique Dame. In December 2006 he conducted very successful a new production of Tiefland.

Opera engagements have led him to Barcelona, to the Cincinnati Opera, the State Opera Dresden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opera Frankfurt, to the Granada Festival and the Nationaltheater Mannheim, to the Opera Australia in Sydney, the Vienna Volksoper and to Japan. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York in 2000, and in 2003, Opernwelt magazine elected him „Conductor of the Year” for his outstanding success with Frau ohne Schatten in Frankfurt.

On the concert stage Sebastian Weigle has worked with the Staatskapelle Berlin, Dresden Staatskapelle, Berliner Symphoniker, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestras of Aalborg, Hamburger Symphoniker, Helsingborg, Jerusalem and Trondheim, Berliner Symphoniker and Granada, to the Hamburger Philharmoniker, Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester (Munich), to the MDR Sinfonieorchester, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Niederösterreichische Tonkünstler-Orchester, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart and the RSO Vienna as well as in Tokyo, Melbourne and at the Grant Park Festival Chicago.

Several recordings are available, among them DVD's of the operas Wozzeck by Alban Berg (Opus Arte), Lohengrin by R. Wagner (Euroarts), and Boris Godunov by M. Mussorgsky (TDK), and CD of Sacred Arias with the bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff (DGG).
