Sigi Stadermann (Conductor)

Born: January 18, 1923 - Chemnitz, Germany
Died: July 21, 2011 - New York City, New York, USA

The conductor, Sigi Stadermann, received his first instructions in piano in Germany from Prof. Güse-Gobel. He came to Israel, then Palestine, in 1939 with Youth Allyah, continuing his studies in piano. He joined the British Army in 1941 for a service during World War II. During the Italian campaign he came to Florence, where he studied with Luigi Dallapiccola. After demobilisation he was graduated from the Israel College for Music Teachers in Tel-Aviv, continuing studies in piano with J. Bernstein, composition with M. Seter and conducting with O. Selberg and G. Singer in Tel Aviv and E. Bigot at the National Conservatory in Paris.

Back in Israel in 1954 Sigi Stadermann conducted the Ramat-Gan Chamber Orchestra, Histadrut Symphony Orchestra, Municipal Orchestra of Tel-Aviv, and the Ramat Gan and Ein Hahoresh Choirs.

In 1957 Sigi Stadermann became Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Abu-Gosh - Kiryath-Yearim Music Festival and of its permanent Choir and Orchestra. This festival was to become a major musical event in Israel, renowned for its unique presentations of orchestral, choral and chamber music and for the high standard it achieved during its 15 years of existence (1957-1972) under Sigi Stadermann's direction. His performances of the master works - always in the original text - which seldom or never before where brought to the Israeli public made a valuable contribution to musical life in the country.
