Heinz Hennig (Choral Conductor)

Born: May 25, 1927 - Hannover, Germany
Died: January 29, 2002

The German choral conductor, Heinz Hennig, studied piano and conducting in Frankfurt/Main, Germany.

In 1950 Heinz Hennig founded the Knabenchor Hannover (Hannover Boys' Choir), which he continued to direct until the end of 2001. His main recorded legacy is the contribution of his choir and its soloists to the recording of Bach's cantatas on Teldec. In that project he worked closely together with Gustav Leonhardt. One of the best soloists in the series was Sebastian Hennig, Heinz' son. The choir made other important recordings, especially the Geistliche Chormusik by Schütz.

From 1962 to 1992 Heinz Hennig also taught conducting and was the conductor of the College of Music and Theatre Chamber Choir in Hannover, holding from 1970 the post of Vice-President of the College in addition. In 1997 he was awarded "das große Verdienstkreuz des Niedersächsischen Verdienstordens". A short while after he transfrered the Knabenchor Hannover to his successor Jörg Breiding, Heinz Hennig died in January 2002.
