1. Was bist du doch, o Seele, so betrübet,
da dir der Herr ein Kreuz zu tragen giebet?
Was grämst du dich.
so ängstiglich,
als würdest du drum nicht von Gott geliebet? |
1. Why, O my soul, art thou cast down within thee?
Because thy Lord a Cross to bear has given thee?
Why dost thou sigh
So bitterly,
Forgetting God with love doth e'er regard thee? |

2. Wie bist du so unruhig und bekümmert,
weil dich die Freudensonne nicht anschimmert
Was sorgest du,
bist voll Unruh?
Dadurch wird ja dein Zustand nur verschlimmert. |
2. Why restless art, by grief and care?
Dost think ne'er shines on thee God's sunlight bless?
Why moans thy heart
So sore a smart,
With grief and heavy weight of woe? |

3. Was quälst du dich mit Zweifelmut und Sorgen,
weil dir des Herren Hülfe ist verborgen?
Ach! wirf auf ihn
die Sorge hin,
der dich bisher versorgt, hilft heut und morgen. |

4. Er lässt gewisslich dich nicht hülflos bleiben
und wird zur rechten Zeit die Not vertreiben.
Nach Angst und Leid
folgt Lust und Freud,
drum sollt du nur geduldig sein und gläuben. |
|
|
5. Gott tut dir väterlich als seinem Kinde,
sind gleich die Schläge hart und nicht gelinde,
so trau ihm doch,
er liebt dich noch
und schafft, dass endlich all dein Leid verschwinde. |

6. Halt stille in Geduld, Gott meint es treulich,
und seiner Ruten Zucht ist dir gedeihlich
dass sei gewiss
und gläube dies,
das liebe Kreuz ist dir sehr gut und heilig. |

7. Harr nur und trau auf Gott in allem Leiden
und lass dich keine Not von ihm abscheiden,
hör, was er sagt,
sei unverzagt,
mein Kind, ich will dich mir zum Preis bereiten. |
7. Have faith in God, whate'er thy future may be;
No matter what He sends, let nought dismay thee!
To Him give heed
Who hath decreed
And in His praise to sound thy voice hath willed thee. |

8. Drum, Seele, sei getrost zu Gott erhoben,
sein hülfreich Antlitz zeigt sich dir von oben,
er ist dein Gott,
hilft dir aus Not,
du sollt ihn hier und dort mit Freuden loben. |
8. And so, my soul, look up to God above thee!
His countenance doth beam with love upon thee.
He is thy Lord;
Then be assured,
Lift up thy voice and sing His praises alway! |
