Ref. in hymnals/hymn books: KGEL 172

Description:

Caspar Friedrich Nachtenhöfer’s hymn was first published in the Coburg Hymn-book of 1667, to the anonymous melody “Hast du denn, Liebster,” which had appeared two years earlier (1665) in the Stralsund Hymn-book. Zahn (No. 1912) supposes it founded on a secular tune.

Not used in J.S. Bach's vocal works.

German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

|Ewiger Gott!
Kann dich mein jammer und noth
Bringen zu menschengeberden?

To be added

Wende den jammer und noth;
Tilge die höllischen flammen!

4. Gib mir, o Jesu! nur heilige, gute gedanken;
Heiliger Gott!
Laß mich nach deinem gebot
Herzlich im glauben dir danken.

5. Führe mich endlich, o Jesu! in's ewige leben,
Welches du allen, die gläuben, versprochen zu geben;
Da ich bei Gott,
Ohne noth, jammer und tod,
Ewig in freuden kann schweben.
