German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1

Jesu, der du meine Seele
Hast durch deinen bittern Tod
Aus des Teufels finstern Höhle
Und der schweren Seelennot
Kräftiglich herausgerissen
Und mich solches lassen wissen
Durch dein angenehmes Wort,
Sei doch itzt, o Gott, mein Hort!

Jesus, it is by you that my soul
through your bitter death
from the devilís dark hell
and the heavy pain of sin
has been mightily snatched away,
and you have made this known to me
through your delightful word:
be now, oh God, my stronghold.

2

Treulich hast du ja gesuchet
die verlorn Schäfelein,
als sie liefen ganz verfluchet
in der Hölle Pful hinein.
Ja, du Satans-Ueberwinder
hast die hoch-betrübten Sünder
so gerufen zu der Buß,
daß ich willig kommen muß.

Faithfully you have looked for
the poor lost sheep
as they ran damned
down to the pit of hell.
Indeed you, Satanís conqueror,
have in such a way called sinners
in their great distress
to repentance that I must freely come to you.

3

Ach ich bin ein Kind der Sünden,
ach ich irre weit und breit !

Es ist nichts an mir zu finden
als nur Ungerechtigkeit.
All mein Dichten, all mein Trachten,
heisset unsern Gott verachten.
Böslich leb ich ganz und gar,
und sehr gottlos immerdar.

Ah, I am a child of sin,
ah I wander far and wide.
There is nothing to find
within me but injustice.
All that I say and do
reveals contempt for our God.
My way of life is completely evil
and always thoroughly godless.

4

Herr, ich muß es ja bekennen,
daß nichts Gutes wohnt in mir :
das zwar was wir Wollen nennen,
halt ich meiner Seele für ;
aber Fleisch und Blut zu zwingen,
und das Gute zu vollbringen,
folget gar nicht, wie es soll ;
was ich nicht will, thu ich wohl.

Lord, I must indeed confess
that nothing good dwells in me:
what we truly call our will
I regard in my soul;
but to compel flesh and blood
and to accomplish what is good
does not follow, as it should;
what I do not want to, I in fact do.

5

Aber, Herr, ich kann nicht wissen,
wie viel meiner Fehler sein,
mein Gemüth ist ganz zerrissen
durch der Sünden Schmerz und Pein,
und mein Herz ist matt von Sorgen ;
ach vergieb mir das Verborgen !
Rechne nicht die Missethat,
die dich, Herr, erzörnet hat.

But, Lord, I cannot know
how many are my faults;
my soul is completely torn apart
by the sorrow and pain of my sins
and my heart is weak with cares;
ah, forgive me what is hidden!
Do not count my misdeeds
that have angered you, Lord.

6

Jesu, du hast weggenommen
meine Schulden durch dein Blut :
laß es, o Erlöser, kommen
meiner Seligkeit zu gut :
und dieweil du so zerschlagen
hast die Sünd am Kreuz getragen,
ey, so sprich mich endlich frei,
daß ich ganz dein eigen sei!

Jesus, you have taken away
my guilt through your blood:
grant, o Redeemer,
that my salvation may be fulfilled;
and since you have destroyed
sin by bearing it on the cross,
oh, then say that I am free for ever
so that I may be wholly yours.

7

Weil mich auch der Hölle Schrecken,
und des Satans Grimmigkeit
vielmals pflegen aufzuwe-cken,
und zu führen in den Streit,
daß ich schier muß unterliegen,
ach, so hilf, Herr Jesu, siegen !
O du meine Zuversicht,
laß mich ja verzagen nicht !

Since the terror of hell
and Satanís ferocity
are often accustomed to rouse me
and lead me into battle
so that I must almost be defeated,
ah then help me, Lord Jesus, to be victorious.
Oh you who are my assurance
do not let me despair!

8

Deine roth-gefärbten Wunden,
deine Nägel, Kron, und Grab ;
deine Schenkel vest gebunden,
wenden alle Plagen ab.
Deine Pein und blutig Schwitzen,
deine Striemen, Schläg und Ritzen,
deine Marter, Angst und Stich,
o Herr Jesu, trö-sten mich !

Your wounds stained red,
your nails, crown and grave,
your thighs tied up
turn aside all troubles.
Your pain and bloody sweat,
your weals, blows and scratches.
your torture, anguish and pain,
o Lord Jesus , bring me consolation

9

Wenn ich vor Gericht soll treten,
da man nicht entfliehen kann ;
ach, so wollest du mich retten,
und dich meiner nehmen an.
Du allein, Herr, kannst es wehren,
daß ich nicht den Fluch darf hören :
ihr, zu meiner linken Hand,
seyd von mir noch nie erkannt !

When I must go before the tribunal
from which nobody may flee,
ah, then may you be willing to save me
and take me to your side.
You alone , Lord, are able to prevent me
from having to hear the condemnation:
You on my left hand
I do not know you!

10

Du ergründest meine Schmerzen,
du erkennest meine Pein ;
es ist nichts in meinem Herzen,
als dein herber Tod allein.
Dies mein Herz mit Leid vermenget,
das dein theures Blut besprenget,
so am Kreuz vergossen ist,
geb ich dir, Herr Jesu Christ !

You penetrate my sorrow,
you know my pain;
there is nothing in my heart
but your bitter death alone.
This heart confused with suffering,
sprinkled by your precious blood
that was shed on the cross
I give to you , Lord, Jesus Christ.

11

Nun, ich weiß, du wirst mir stillen
Mein Gewissen, das mich plagt.
Es wird deine Treu erfüllen,
Was du selber hast gesagt:
Dass auf dieser weiten Erden
Keiner soll verloren werden,
Sondern ewig leben soll,
Wenn er nur ist Glaubens voll.

Now I know you will quieten
my conscience, that torments me
Your faithfulness will fulfill
what you have said yourself:
that on this wide earth
no one should be lost
but should live for ever,
if only he is full of faith.

12

Herr, ich glaube, hilf mir Schwachen,
Laß mich ja verzagen nicht;
Du, du kannst mich stärker machen,
Wenn mich Sünd und Tod anficht.
Deiner Güte will ich trauen,
Bis ich fröhlich werde schauen
Dich, Herr Jesu, nach dem Streit
In der süßen Ewigkeit.

Lord, I believe, help my weakness!
Let me not and one despair
you, you can make you stronger,
when sin and death trouble me.
I want to trust your goodness
until I shall joyfully behold
you, Lord Jesus, after the battle
in the happiness of eternity.
