Singable English Translation

1

Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern
Voll Gnad' und Wahrheit von dem Herrn,
Die süße Wurzel Jesse!
Du Sohn David zus Jakobs Stamm,
Mein König und mein Bräutigam,
Hast mir mein Herz besessen,
Lieblich, freundlich,
Schön und herrlich, groß und ehrlich,
Reich von Gaben,
Hoch und sehr prächtig erhaben!

O Morning Star! How fair and bright!
O Son of Jesse, noble light—
The dawn of love’s expression—
My Bridegroom and my King of Grace—
I long to live in your embrace—
My heart is your possession—
Nearest, dearest,
Friend most gracious, fair, and precious, how you love me,
Though so high enthroned above me.

2

Ei meine Perl', du werte Kron',
Wahr'r Gottes- und Mariensohn,
Ein hochgeborner König!
Mein Herz heißt dich ein Lilium,
Dein süßes Evangelium
Ist lauter Milch und Honig.
Ei mein Blümlein,
Hosianna, himmlisch Manna,
Das wir essen,
Deiner kann ich nicht vergessen!

My pearl, my gold, my crown, my ring,
Oh, Mary’s son, my highborn king,
My gospel, life and power—
A Word of mercy, milk divine,
The Fairest Rose— I call you mine,
My lovely lily flower!
Pleading, needing,
Gladly hastening, manna tasting while in wonder
Honey pure I taste and ponder.

3

Geuss sehr tief in mein Herz hinein,
Du heller Jaspis und Rubin,
Die Flamme deiner Liebe
Und erfreu' mich, daß ich doch bleib'
An deinem auserwählten Leib
Ein' lebendige Rippe!
Nach dir ist mir,
Gratiosa coeli rosa,
Krank und glimmet
Mein Herz, durch Liebe verwundet.

Now blood-red rubies, jasper fine
Pour out in flames of joy divine,
A fever fading never.
All other joys I cast aside—
I shall a living rib abide
Within your body ever—
Crying, sighing,
Sick with yearning—love’s sweet burning breaks defenses,
Takes my heart and rules my senses.

4

Von Gott kommt mir ein Freudenschein,
Wenn du mit deinen Äugelein
Mich freundlich tust anblicken.
O Herr Jesu, mein trautes Gut,
Dein Wort, dein Geist, dein Leib und Blut
Mich innerlich erquicken!
Nimm mich freundlich
In dein' Arme, daß ich warme
Werd' von Gnaden!
Auf dein Wort komm' ich geladen.

4 What lights of God my eyes entrance
As you with kind and friendly glance
And tender eyes invite me!—
Your body pure and holy blood,
Your Word and Spirit, true and good,
With heav’nly joy delight me—
Holy, holy,
Comfort hearing, vows of caring, truth and graces—
Warm me in your love’s embraces.

5

Herr Gott Vater, mein starker Held,
Du hast mich ewig vor der Welt
In deinem Sohn geliebet.
Dein Sohn hat mich ihm selbst vertraut,
Er ist mein Schatz, ich bin sein' Braut,
Sehr hoch in ihm erfreuet.
Eia, eia,
Himmlisch Leben wird er geben
Mir dort oben!
Ewig soll mein Herz ihn loben.

O mighty hero, Father kind,
You had a gracious thought in mind
There long before creation.
You loved me in your Son, my King—
He gave me his betrothal ring,
A soul of exultation—
Eia, eia,
He is pleasure, heav’nly treasure; praises voicing,
I shall never stop rejoicing!

6

Zwingt die Saiten in Zithara
Und laßt die süße Musika
Ganz freudenreich erschallen,
Daß ich möge mit Jesulein,
Dem wunderschönen Bräut'gam mein,
In steter Liebe wallen!
Singet, springet,
Jubilieret, triumphieret,
Dankt dem Herren!
Groß ist der König der Ehren!

Let all glad songs of music ring,
Lift up the voice and strike the string,
By harp and choir attended.
With Jesus, lovely Bridegroom, mine,
I walk in constant love divine
Till traveling days are ended
Singing, ringing!
Triumph glorious, O victorious adoration!
Praise the King, in exultation!

7

Wie bin ich doch so herzlich froh,
Daß mein Schatz ist das A und O.
Der Anfang und das Ende!
Er wird mich doch zu seinem Preis
Aufnehmen in das Paradeis,
Des klopf' ich in die Hände.
Amen! Amen!
Komm, du schöne Freudenkrone,
Bleib nicht lange,
Deiner wart' ich mit Verlangen!

His beauty cannot be surpassed,
My Christ, my wealth, the first and last—
He takes me to salvation!
The palace waits in paradise.
I clap my hands, I lift my eyes
In happy expectation!
Amen, amen,
Come, O Savior, crown of favor, hunger sating,
Here impatient I am waiting.
