This text was used by Bach to begin his ambitious cycle of chorale cantatas on 11th June 1724. In the hymn books of Bach’s time Rist’s poem is usually printed with sixteen stanzas. The unknown librettist of BWV 20 used as the basis for his text a shortened version that was used in such hymn books as that of Gottfried Vopelius (1682). To make the argument of the poem clearer the longer version is translated. The stanzas not used in BWV 20 -4,7,8 and 12- are not bolded. The verse numbers of the shortened version are in (brackets). |

A Serious Consideration of Endless Eternity |

O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort,
O Schwert, das durch die Seele bohrt,
O Anfang sonder Ende!
O Ewigkeit, Zeit ohne Zeit,
Ich weiß für großer Traurigkeit
Nicht, wo ich mich hinwende!
Mein ganz erschrocknes Herz erbebt,
Daß mir die Zung am Gaumen klebt |
O eternity, you word of thunder,
o sword that pierces through my soul,
o beginning that has no end!
O eternity, time without time!
Facing great sorrow I do not know
where I should turn.
My heart completely terrified shudders
so that my tongue clings to my gums |

Kein Unglück ist in aller Welt,
Das endlich mit der Zeit nicht fällt
Und ganz wird aufgehoben.
Die Ewigkeit nur hat kein Ziel,
Sie treibet fort und fort ihr Spiel,
Läßt nimmer ab zu toben.
Ja, wie mein Heiland selber spricht:
Aus ihr ist kein Erlösung nicht. |
There is no misfortune in all the world
that finally does not cease with time
and become completely cancelled.
Only eternity has no end,
it carries on and on its game,
it never desists from its rage.
Indeed, as my saviour himself says:
from eternity there is no release |

O Ewigkeit, du machst mir bang,
O ewig, ewig ist zu lang,
Hie gilt fürwahr kein Scherzen!
Drüm, wenn ich diese lange Nacht
Zusamt der großen Pein betracht,
Erschreck ich recht von Herzen.
Nichts ist zu finden weit und breit
So schrecklich als die Ewigkeit. |
O eternity, you make me afraid,
O eternal, eternal is too long,
here there is really no jesting:
therefore when I consider this long night
along with the great pain,
I am terrified from the bottom of my heart.
Nothing can be found far and wide
so terrifying as eternity. |

Was acht ich Wasser, Feur und Schwert
Dies alles ist kaum nennenswert,
Es kann nicht lange dauren.
Was wär es, wenn gleich ein Tyrann,
Der funfzig Jahr kaum leben kann,
Mich endlich ließ vermauren?
Gefängnis, Marter, Angst und Pein
Die können ja nicht ewig sein. |
What do I care about water, fire and sword?
All this is scarcely worth mentioning,
it cannot last for long.
What would it matter,even though a tyrant
who can scarcely live for fifty years-
had me shut away up to the end?
Imprisonment, torture, anguish and pain
cannot exist eternally |

Wenn der Verdammten große Qual
So manches Jahr, als an der Zahl
Hie Menschen sich ernähren,
Als manchen Stern der Himmel hegt.
Als manches Laub das Erdreich trägt,
Noch endlich sollte währen,
So wäre doch der Pein zuletzt
Ihr recht bestimmtes Ziel gesetzt. |
If the great torment of the damned
were to go on for as many years
as the number that men live here,
as many as the stars the heaven contains,
as many as the leaves the earth bears,
then finally the pain would have
a certain and definite end |

Nun aber, wenn du die Gefahr
Viel hundert tausend, tausend Jahr
Hast kläglich ausgestanden
Und von den Teufeln solcher Frist
Ganz grausamlich gemartert bist,
Ist doch kein Schluß vorhanden.
Die Zeit, so niemand zählen kann,
Die fänget stets vom neuen an. |
But now, if you have suffered
the danger in misery
for a hundred thousand thousand years
and for that length of time
have been cruelly tortured by the devils,
there is still no end at hand.
The time, that no one can count,
continually begins anew. |

Liegt einer krank und ruhet gleich
Im Bette, das vom Golde reich
Recht fürstlich ist gezieret,
So hasset er doch solchen Pracht
Auch so, daß er die ganze Nacht
Ein kläglichs Leben führet;
Er zählet alle Glockenschlag
Und seufzet nach dem lieben Tag. |
If someone lies sick and rests
in a bed that is richly
and regally decorated,
then he hates such splendour
to such an extent that for the whole night
he leads a miserable life.
He counts every stroke of the clock
and sighs for the dear day. |

Ach, was ist das! Der Höllen Pein
Wird nicht wie Leibes Krankheit sein
Und mit der Zeit sich enden;
Es wird sich der Verdammten Schar
Im Feur und Schwefel immerdar
Mit Zorn und Grimm ümwenden.
Und dies ihr unbegreiflichs Leid
Soll währen bis in Ewigkeit! |
Ah, what is that? Hell’s pain
will not be like bodily illness
and end in time.
The crowd of the damned
forever amidst fire and brimstone
will face wrath and fury,
and this inconceivable suffering of theirs
will go on throughout eternity. |

Ach Gott, wie bist du so gerecht,
Wie strafest du die bösen Knecht
Im heißen Pfuhl der Schmerzen!
Auf kurze Sünden dieser Welt
Hast du so lange Pein bestellt!
Ach, nimm dies wohl zu Herzen
Und merk auf dies, o Menschenkind:
Kurz ist die Zeit, der Tod geschwind! |
Ah God, how righteous you are,
how hard you punish an evil servant
in the burning slough of sorrows!
For the brief sins of this world
you have appointed so long a pain.
Ah, take this to heart,
consider it often, o child of mankind:
time is brief, death swift. |

Ach, fliehe doch des Teufels Strick!
Die Wollust kann ein' Augenblick
Und länger nicht ergetzen.
Dafür wilt du dein arme Seel
Hernachmals in des Teufels Höhl
Hin zur Vergeltung setzen!
Ja schöner Tausch, ja wohl gewagt,
Das bei den Teufeln wird beklagt. |
Ah, flee the devil’s halter!
Pleasure can give delight
for a moment and not longer.
For the sake of this do you want
in the future to put your poor soul
in the devil’s pit in repayment?
That is indeed a fine and daring exchange
for which you will weep in the midst of devils. |

Solang ein Gott im Himmel lebt
Und über alle Wolken schwebt,
Wird solche Marter währen.
Es wird sie plagen Kält und Hitz,
Angst, Hu, Schrecken, Feur und Blitz
Und sie doch nie verzehren.
Denn wird sich enden diese Pein,
Wenn Gott nicht mehr wird ewig sein. |
As long as a God lives in heaven
and soars above all the clouds
such torture will last.
Cold and heat will torment them,
anguish, terror fire and lightning,
and yet not consume them.
For these pains will end
when God will no longer be eternal. |

Die Marter bleibet immerdar,
Als anfangs sie beschaffen war,
Sie kann sich nicht vermindern.
Es ist ein Arbeit sonder Ruh,
Sie nimmt an Klag und Seufzen zu
Bei jenen Satanskindern.
O Sünder, deine Missetat
Empfindet weder Trost noch Rat! |
The torture remains forever
as it was arranged in the beginning,
it can never grow less.
It is a work without rest,
it forces sighs and laments
from all of Satan’s children.
O sinner, your wrongdoing
experiences neither comfort nor a way out. |

Wach auf, o Mensch, vom Sündenschlaf,
Ermuntre dich, verlornes Schaf,
Und bessre bald dein Leben!
Wach auf, es ist doch hohe Zeit,
Es kommt heran die Ewigkeit,
Dir deinen Lohn zu geben!
Vieleicht ist heut der letzte Tag,
Wer weiß noch, wie man sterben mag? |
Wake up, o man, from the sleep of sin,
rouse yourself, lost sheep,
and soon make better your life!
Wake up, it is high time,
Eternity comes upon you
to give you your reward!
Perhaps today is the last day,
who knows when death may come? |

Pracht, Hoffart, Reichtum, Ehr und Geld
Dir länger nicht gebieten!
Schau an die große Sicherheit,
Die falsche Welt und böse Zeit
Zusamt des Teufels Wüten!

Die vorerwähnte lange Nacht! |
Then let the lust of this world,
splendour, arrogance, wealth, honour and gold
no longer rule over you!
Look towards the great assurance,
let the false world and evil time
rage along with the devil!
Before everything keep in mind
the long night about which you have been warned beforehand. |

O you accursed child of mankind
mad with sin, blind in heart,
cease to love the world!
Ah, ah shall the pain of hell
that is greater than a thousand hangmen
afflict you without end?
Where lives a man so eloquent
that he can express this matter? |
